anyone had issues with aftermarket oil filters?

My last oil change, I used a Wix oil filter. Previously, I had always used OEM filters from the dealer parts counter. Today at lunch, I fired up the car and noticed a slight knocking sound for 2 to 3 seconds (identical to the sound you get at first start after doing an oil/filter change). Didn't think much of it. Car ran fine when I drove away.

When I got back from lunch, I saw a trail of motor oil on the ground behind my car. Let the car sit for 5 minutes, then checked the oil. It was exactly at the low mark on the dipstick. I had just checked the oil on Sunday, at it had been at the full mark, so this means the car has leaked about a quart of oil in 3 days. Looks like the leak is coming from the oil filter housing area, possibly where the housing connects to the engine underneath the intake plenum.

Anyone know if this leak can be caused by the Wix filter? Maybe an overpressure in the housing, leading to oil blowing by the housing gasket at the engine block? I'm gonna run down to the dealer and get an OEM gasket in the morning. Hopefully this fixes the issue, otherwise the labor would be pretty intensive getting to the leaking gasket.

Do not use wix oil filter, I know from experience. The wix does not fit on the cap(it does not click when you put it together) and the oil will leak since the cap can not be tightened.

Use on OEM filter or STP. I have been using STP oil filter and it fits perfectly and I have no problem till now.

I had the same problem with the Wix filter, I think the cover o-ring is too small in diameter, and caused an oil leaked when the motor was cold. For the price, I only use OEM filters, plus they give you a new oil drain plug gasket.

See TSB 05-20-002 "Use of aftermarket oil filters causing engine knocking noise".

I suspect the O-rings - that's what they're there for - to make a seal. Make sure the new ones are positioned properly and lubed.

Around here the oem filters are priced the same as second source, so why go with stuff like Wix.

I also had noticeable engine knock when using the Wix cartridge filter on my Santa Fe V6. I didn't have any leaking problems but I only left the filter in for about a week before throwing it away and putting an OE filter in. No noise at all during start up with OE filter. I bought 4 filters from my dealer so I have them on hand.

Thanks for the replies everybody. I recall the larger gasket didn't slide onto the cap quite as snug as the OEM gasket. I'll be heading down to the dealer in a few minutes to pick up a filter kit. I happened to do my last oil change at my pops' house. The dealer up there closes early on Saturdays, so I went ahead and got the Wix filter at the local auto parts store. Figured Wix had always served our family well in the past. Guess they screwed up with this particular application though. I'll post an update after I change out the filter.
