2012 Sonata 2.0T owner from Iowa

turbo issues! My wife’s 2012 Sonata had an oil leak that has been noticeable for awhile. We decided while the brakes done + a new tie rod to also have the leak checked out. The mechanic said the oil leak was from both the valve cover and worse, inside the turbo? He said on this model the only way to fix the oil leak “inside the turbo” where he said it was is to replace the turbo.
Well, 1750.00 later we have a new valve cover gasket and apparently a new (refurbished turbo)
I am wondering if we possibly got ripped as the Only common oil leak issues I seem to find online from the turbo is the oil feedline

The oil "leak" from the turbo could have been just oil coming from the valve cover and looked like it was from the turbo. Or like you said it could have been the feed line. Or it could have actually been internal issue in the turbo. Do you have pics of where the leaks were coming from??

Like Foriegn said it depends on where the leak actually is. If it was at the bearing a rebuild is needed or a replacement.

How many miles?

Best practices for requesting help:If you haven't done so fill in your vehicle info and profile page. At upper right corner under the search box click on user cp (it's your control panel)
This info will show up to the left under your user name and is very helpful.
BE SURE TO ADD YOUR LOCATION SO WE KNOW WHAT MARKET YOU ARE IN.

  • Be sure you are in the correct forum for your vehicle.
  • Do a search for your problem. A lot of stuff has been asked and answered.
  • Do not double post for the same problem.
  • Give the model year....Engine size...transmission type (auto or standard)
  • Take a single issue at a time. Posting multiple issues at once will get convoluted very quickly
  • VIN number can be very helpful
  • Vehicle history can be good. How many miles. If not bought new, how many have you put on it.
  • Describe the problem best you can. If a noise can you get a sound or video file
  • Tell us what has been done, if anything, thus far. If tests have been performed give actual results not OK or passed. If scanned for codes the actual code(s) not O2 sensor or MAF, Etc.
  • If the vehicle has been to a repair facility it would be nice if you could post a picture of that invoice/bill
  • If your vehicle is under warranty you should have the dealer check it out. If it's a problem they see many times they will generate a safety recall of TSB. This is how they know of the problem.

This information can save a lot of time and get you the answers you need much faster.

Thanks,

Not seen Turbo leak,, always been the oil line between block to top of turbo for shaft oiling.. front cover seen to leak at lower corner at the oil pan rail (they fail to goo the cover properly,, everybody seem to think oil pan)

Valve cover,, naaaa,, not been concern, unless oil totally neglected to point it destroy the rubber' integrity of cam cover gasket,, but then engine be full of mud

Had a turbo puke that smoke like all get out from the tail pipe,, poured couple qt of nasty black diesel type oil from intercooler pipe undr car when removed,, oil everywhere and on everything.. mess to clean up..

BTW,, new Hyundai part number turbo is $1400

<--- Please fill in the 'location' and 'what you drive(year & chassis) and engine size' boxes on your personal profile page.
