Ticking noise while accelerating

I bought a new 2014 Elantra last Monday. Around 100 miles (Wednesday) I noticed it was making a ticking noise when accelerating. The sound gets louder at higher RPMs and goes away when I get off of the accelerator. You can't hear it over the radio but it's embarrassing when my passengers do. It almost sounds like a puff of air escaping or something, similar to a go-kart engine lol.

Anyways, I took it to the dealer Thursday and they drove it and said the noise was normal during the engines break-in period and if it persists after 15k to bring it back and they would see if there was something that needed tightening. Is anyone else experiencing this?

Over 60k and no ticking noise.

You should go to another dealer for their diagnosis or at least ask them to test drive another vehicle (with low miles) to see if it does the same thing. Also whats with the come back to us after 15,000 miles???? Sounds like a mileage to get you off their back for awhile.

ticking noises are something not to be messed with. you want to find the noise to at least know what it is. a ticking noise can be normal for some engines. for example, some hyundais (older ones) have a noisy EVAP purge valve. its right behind the intake manifold and clacks away all day just fine. noisy, but not a bad thing.

on the other hand a ticking noise can be a bearing starved of oil or some similar manufacturing defect. a defect that could rail the whole engine. i don't want to alarm you, that is rather unusual and not likely. but i think you can understand why i say its worth tracking down.

i second the above idea of having another dealer look at it. you have nothing to lose.

another option is to find it yourself. if you rev the engine in neutral can you still hear it? if not, it may be a suspension issue or even an issue with brakes. transmission is another slim possibility. if you can hear it while not moving, its definitely an issue with the engine. you can always get yourself a cheap mechanic's stethoscope, get someone to rev the engine till you hear it and isolate the location that way.

i'd recommend just turning the TB by hand, but as far as i understand the newer deigns are drive by wire so that may not be possible? either way, just a thought for you.

Ticking at idle is somewhat normal in the Elantra, but audible ticking on acceleration... not so much.

I'd find another dealer; one that doesn't use "break-in" as a lame excuse to get rid of customers until they get used to the condition.

No ticking before or after current 44,000 miles. FWIW.

"IF" this second dealer indeed discovers something, be certain to take the service ticket showing work performed to the original dealer's service manager.

How you decide to verbally address this with the original dealer and/or Hyundai corporate is strictly your choice to decide. If it was me? And this other dealer discovered something? I might consider taking a mild sedative 30 minutes prior to speaking with him.

Believe me, I'm hand delivering it. And unfortunately my local service manager is a she!

I don't care if she's Halle Barry. That is impressive that they have a lady service manager. Kudo's to her, if this is the case. The highest position I've ever seen in a service department that was held by a female was a service writer.

I'd love to see a female tech at my dealer's. Think Sara "Sway" Wayland from the movie "Gone In 60 Seconds." 'Nuff said!
