2019 kona - ironman edition

I happened to have my SUV in for routine service this morning, and had the rare opportunity to thoroughly inspect a limited-edition 2019 Hyundai Kona - (IRONMAN).

Quite the neat vehicle (sticker price $31K)!
YES THERE ARE PIX (no I didn't buy it).

Sharing.

Not my cup of tea either, and I've heard nothing but nightmares about caring for flat finish paint surfaces. Hand wash ALWAYS required, or at the very least no touch car washes.

Is that past general experience or specific to this car?
I was looking at the one in our local dealer and was impressed that the surface was actually smooth and 'shiny' (appeared to be lacquer) even though it looked matt. Very clever.

Agree...matte to the eyes...smooth to the touch. As you said..impressive.

Past general experience, and specific experience with Harley Davidson "flat" finishes. Abrasions (rubbing or even bumping up against the finish) can cause a shiny spot where it's been touched.

Hyundai may have "fixed" the issue, but a flat finish generally can't be buffed out, and if scratched, is VERY difficult to repair, most often requiring repainting the entire panel.

I believe that Hyundai provides specific care instructions for this finish, at least according to my dealer's sales person..

Fair enough.
I agree that normal flat finishes are a pain. I used make and paint models and almost had to wear cotton gloves to handle them after if they had a flat finish. That's why I was particularly curious about the Ironman Kona and surprised to find it not really flat.
I'd guess one of the special instructions for this would be to got use a glossy wax or coating as that might literally put a shine on it

Other than the roof...it's a matte look, not flat.
As the other poster pointed out...it looks matte but feels smooth. Suspect the paint was matte on purpose, and then they put a nice coat of clearcoat on top.
