2018 Elantra gas.

Hello, i have a 2018 elantra SE. i was wondering if its ok to run super unleaded in my elantra. I would not run it all the time, maybe every now and then. If its not safe to do so, im not going to do it. Is it safe to run super unleaded in my elantra? Where I'm from the super unleaded isnt 91, its 93. So bottom line, can you run 93 in a elantra? Will it hurt it? I want to see what yall think, and if anyone has done it, whats the results? Thanks in advance! PS: Sorry, I'm new to the elantra scene and i don't know much about them, lol :laugh:

Complete waste of money to run that high octane in your vehicle. However, your wallet will be lighter and as a result, your car may be slightly faster from the weight savings ;-)

Some brands of fuel only have additives to clean and protect your fuel system in their high octane flavor. Using an occasional tank of high octane for added fuel additives is ok but I rather go to Costco and use their regular octane fuel. Costco's fuel is a top tier fuel but Sam's Club isn't (no surprise there).

I would be interested to know which brands of fuel only have detergent additives in their high octane flavor. I know that years ago, some of the major brands pushed their higher-grade gasolines by saying that they had the best detergent/protection package, while not stating the fact that their lower-octane gasolines also had the same package. But I was not aware that there are currently any fuel companies that do not include additives in their lower grade gas.

Can you share which brands are the culprits?

Using Top Tier Gas is more critical if you have a GDI engine. I don't know about the Sport, but the other trim lines of Elantras all have the 2.0, which is not a GDI engine. That said, I am using Top Tier Gas only, even though I probably don't need to. If you are using Top Tier Gas, you do not need to waste your money on Techron, because the detergent package achieves the same result.

I just use regular, mostly Top Tier with Techron every 7.5K. My previous car running premium helped during summer to get better performance and mileage. I am happy with the way my Elantra performs so did not go that direction. I do add Lucus Fuel Treatment every fill up I had left over from the car sold. Engine is silky smooth and responsive.

One simply only needs what is in top tier to prevent problems though, that's why the standards were developed. Any less than that, you'll have problems early on, any more than that, you're just throwing away your money. More detergent in your fuel means there's less fuel to burn ;-)

Don't believe all the marketing hype companies like Exxon/Chevron/Shell use to push you to pay more at the pump.

The amount of detergent in top tier fuel is insignificant and the cost of it is much more than the cost of fuel.

I use Murphy fuel in my vehicles and have never noticed any problems with it. When I don't use top Tier fuel (Costco), I'm sure to dump some fuel additive on the tank before an oil change.

Kinda funny that many people will rant about fuel on a forum but never check their oil levels regularly and rely on others to "maintain" their vehicles. Still waiting for someone to say, 'My oil change tech says that Shell gasoline is the best."

As long as your using fuel additive you should be fine then. Where I live, costco is the cheapest and also on my commute, so I never need to pick between worse fuel and top tier. Was 3.06 yesterday morning.

I hope you weren't implying that I don't check my own oil! I do all of my own maintenance (where it makes financial/time sense). I only took it to the dealership back before I ran out of the 60K warranty period. Maintenance experience doesn't qualify one to be an expert at this stuff though. I'm an engineer (not in the auto industry) with a strong background in chemistry and mechanics, and minor knowledge in electrical/software/automation. Hence my fascination/participation in car forums and wading through BS.

Ditto. I dumped a bottle of Techron down the filler neck every 7,500-10,000 and kept on keeping on. Never had a fuel issue in 9 years, 3 Elantras, and over 100,000 collective miles between them.
