Drive Modes

I am in Australia and have a 2016 Hyundai Tucson Highlander Turbo AWD release 01/2016 (1.6lt petrol) - I believe it should have Normal/Eco/Sport modes but only Normal and Sport show. In the manual it says if the instrument cluster is faulty it could affect the modes working.

Our local Hyundai mechanic said this model does not have Eco mode...wondering if this is true as everything I have googled suggest it should have all 3 modes.

The North American 2016 1.6t DCT has three: Normal, Eco and Sport. I think they made changes in later years to just two driving modes but can’t be sure to what year.

Thanks for your info Tony. I am in Australia (forgot to mention this) so the Highlander features may be different?

2017 limited with that same engine and I have just sport and normal. I think normal acts like eco unless you really get into the throttle. I rarely use sport, but it is a very noticeable difference in throttle mapping and shift points. Great for highway on-ramps.

I also am in Australia - I have a 2018 ActiveX - it has 3 drive modes, but I think they are a gimmick (at least with my 2.0l GDI engine).

I'm in Aus too, I have an Active X and it has all 3 drive modes, but a friend of ours has a 2016 Highlander and it only has the 2 drive modes

Thank you everyone for your replies - very interesting info and it seems I'm not missing out much on the eco-mode.

I love driving the Hyundai. There are a couple of things I am getting used to and that's the timely accelerating out of corners etc, it seems you have to put just the right amount of pressure on the pedal to avoid any jerkiness through take-off as the gears shift. The newer automatics are certainly different to my 18yo auto I traded for the Hyundai. The other thing that I find interesting is how hard it is for the car to drop from 2nd to 1st gear, you almost have to stop before it will go into 1st.

Definitely happy with this car though - eco mode or not

Thanks again for the feedback everyone, very much appreciated.

2017 SE 2.0L 6-speed auto. I have Normal, Eco and Sport.

Normal has no status.

Eco and Sport both show those words on the cluster.

Eco has a weird shift pattern that I just can't describe. I don't like it as it reminds me of a failing transmission I had years ago.

Sport holds shifts till a much higher RPM when not stomping on the pedal and is quicker to downshift say when you are wanting to pass. Sport mode is reset back to Normal when you shut off the vehicle.

MPG is really about the same in all modes. Maybe .5MPG between tanks.

I just run in normal all the time.

In Europe (TLe model) I have the top spec (similar to Highlander in Aus or Limited in USA) and I only get Normal or Sport.
There's also no Start-Stop module (only the base trim level has it).

With the DCT transmission it's certainly not a gimmick, the car's throttle response and shifting is very different in Sport mode. Can't say anything about the steering though.
