2.4 Engine Problems

Please forgive me if I am beating a dead horse. I scoured the google searches for several hours and decided to simply ask.

I have a 2012 Sonata SE with the standard 2.4l engine.

About a year ago I noticed that it started eating oil and I have no clue where it would go. I would go through 3 quarts in 2k miles. I stressed over taking it back to the dealer. It seems that as soon as it was paid off they didnt seem to treat me with the same southern hospitality that I was used to.

About 6 days ago I was driving home, thankfully close to the dealership, and it simply died. For the past month or so I noticed that the engine was severely underpowered with clacking and rattling. My thought was that it was the crappy gas we sometimes get from the gas stations. I dont buy cheap gas from lower quality producers but I have a feeling that it doesnt matter because the gas probably all comes from the same place. Sometimes its like JET FUEL and sometimes its like someone poured sugar in it.

The dealer told me that it fell under the ClassAction lawsuit but needed to drop the oil pan to the tune of $250. I approved it, they took their pictures, sent them to Hyndai, and it was approved for warranty replacement. I have a rental car at their expense.

They quoted me 90 to 120 days. I made sure they would not charge me any hidden fees or charges for storage, A/C discharge/recharge, fluid replacement, etc... and they emphatically said NO CHARGE.

My question: What specifically is wrong with the engine? Is it a part, wear/tear, poor design, etc...?

Thanks for your patience and time to read and respond!

Engine recall, you shouldn't have paid anything. Hyundai extended the powertrain warranty to 10/120,000 due to engine issues. You should be getting a new engine free of charge but may take 3-4 months.

I would go back and get a refund on my money.

As far as the issue, nobody is being honest about it.

$250 to drop the oil pan is ridiculous; i hope you challenge that transaction...

Sorry, Forum, I was not clear. I was not charged the $250. However, I did not mention that I had to rent myself a car while they waited on Hyundai. It was only one day but they wont cover the one day because they were still diagnosing the problem.

I will be claiming that with my HPP extended warranty.

I really just want to know what the deal is with the engine. Either way its all free and practically starting the mileage at 00000000.

Thanks, everyone!

My exact words to my SA was "I don't care what the belt looks like, it has been on the car for 123K miles in Arizona heat. It can look brand new, CHANGE IT!!!! When I pick up my car it better say new belt on the service receipt." lol

It's just a bad design, but Hyundai isn't saying EXACTLY what is causing it. Maybe a whistleblower will eventually leak the info.

I have to ask though, during the entire month that you heard the engine rattling, did you check the oil?

I am not quite sure the motive of this question. I sense some hidden passive aggression....

Yes, I did check the oil; using the dipstick To answer the next question(s), no, there was not evidence of shavings and the level was not going down as quickly as it had the previous months.
