The Shark Racing Kit was ordered with LED bulbs and when they arrived I noticed that the LED Bulbs were made in China (Post 13). Guess what, they started flickering last week, so the cheap China made LEDs are definitely not worth buying.
I'm going to give these a try. Hopefully the JDM ASTAR will be of better quality. They just arrived today, I'll put them in Saturday
I had a bunch of people tell me that China LEDs are cheap and won't last. I already got a few "I told you so". Any way I'll replace them Saturday, I also need to do an oil change on my Honda.
Anyway I've got my fingers crossed that the JDM ASTAR is a better quality LED bulb.
LEDs from China are hit or miss and the failure is likely due to a combination of cheap electronics and insufficient heat sinking. I did the same upgrade but purchased the 80W LEDs from K5 Optima Store. I bench tested them to see how they would withstand the heat, and after an initial drop in output, they seemed to function well. I ran them for about a year without issue and found the color to match my HIDs better than the more yellow halogens. Only problem was they did not project very well since the reflector was designed for halogens, not LEDs. I ended up doing an HID retrofit shown in this post. Output is now significantly better and the color matches my low beam HIDs perfectly. I wired them independently, so now I have the benefit of running fogs alone. Since the projector is bi-xenon, I wired the solenoid circuit to my high beams so now I can have fogs, lows and highs at the same time for a wall of light.
OK I got around to changing the LED Fog Light bulbs a few hours ago. For the heck of it I took a picture of the original bulb, the China made bulb that failed and the new bulb
Here is a close up of the China made bulb. What it looks like is three strips with 4 LEDs each, all soldered to a stock 881 Base. Definitely looks cheap and I don't see any driving circuit (I can see between the strips) or any dropping resistor. (Doesn't mean its not there). But I'm assuming that an LED Bulb should last longer than a year and a half.
The new ones definitely seem brighter, when it gets dark I'll take a picture.
881 is a 27w 400lm bulb. Socket/plug design goes up to 55w if you research equivalent. Used to cut the bulb at the tabs to make high output 921's for reverse.
A 4 watt quality LED should be equivalent.
881 base/bulb PGJ13 and T-3-1/4
H8 PGJ19-1 and T-4
Power/current used by the new bulb will determine its life. I don't expect much from the small heatsink area/size. Measure it's current with vehicle running. Should be interesting to see how much heat the lowly heatsink will have to dump.
