Detonation and damage from oil starvation are two different things.
Detonation is easy to troubleshoot. If you are using 87-90 octane fuel, run it empty and refill up with 92-94 octane fuel. If rattling is reduced, you have dirty injectors, carbon buildup, or other tuneup issues, like running hot from defective thermostat/radiator cap, spent coolant or incorrect antifreeze ratio, improper A/F ratio from questionable o2 sensors or dirty injectors, bad spark plugs, clogged engine air filter......
Engine oil starvation damage can't be fixed without a rebuild. So, top off oil as needed and don't wait for it to be a pint low. Add an ounce a week if needed. Running engine low on oil will also sludge engine up pretty good. So, practice the severe service 3750 mile interval, with that fancy high mileage 5w30 synthetic oil. Waiting for the idiot oil light to come on usually leads to rapid engine death.
When cleaning a sludged engine, every brand of oil uses different base oils, detergents, dispersants, additives.... to clean and keep the engine clean. So, alternate among the full synthetic HM oils... Mobil1, Pennzoil, Castrol, RoyalPurple, Valvoline, Oreilly housebrand.... all have highmileage synthetic oils.
I am currently using a solvent/additive product in my fuel and oil. Each tank of gas gets 1-2 ounces of FuelPowerPlus, and each quart of oil gets 1 ounce of LubeControl added to it. This will clean and prevent normal 'negligence' issues. Its not cheap but I only buy a quart pack every 50k miles and treat 5 cars with it. 2 cars at ~50k, one at 100k, and two more at ~150k. Definitely scrubs the engine clean internally and externally. Just follow the bottle directions and you can't go wrong.

If the above doesn't interest you, when a pint low, a bottle of STP, Hyperlube, or Lubegard... any can be used as a 1 time top off during the oil run interval.
12oz Hyperlube Zinc Substitute is an ester polymer additive(Ketjenlube).
Hy-Per Lube Zinc Replacement Additive | Zinc Oil Additive | ZDDP Additive
Good ol' STP that everyone loves to hate in 15oz bottle:
Synthetic Oil Treatment | STP.com
Ultra 5 In 1 High Performance Engine Treatment | STP.com
And, the 10oz moly/LXE ester in lubegard:
LUBEGARD BIO-TECH Engine Oil Protectant
Or a run with lanolin/aliphatic/polyol ester cleaner like autorx which can be used full dosed for a run, or an ounce or two at every oil change:

Do not use more than 1 additive product during an oil interval.
I blame STP for loading this filter up with soot. My short ripper 2.4GDI is dirtier than I want to believe.

I now have STP+LC20+5qts synth oil in my sump. This a big no-no since you shouldn't mix multiple oil additives(but I do what I want). In about 4 months, I will cut open filter to see if there still is crud being cleaned up and collected.
