I'm looking to buy a 2013 2.0T Sonata. I'm trying to make sure that I'm making the best decisions as far as price, warranty, GAP, etc. If anybody could point me in the right direction, I'd appreciate. Also, happy Thanksgiving.

Honestly dude, don't buy a Hyundai. Poor build quality. They look neat and have a lot of included features but they pale in comparison to other manufacturers in quality and reliability. Our 2012 currently has a starter ready to implode, fuel pump that could go at any time and NEEDS A NEW ENGINE of which Hyundai does not have built or stocked. Those are the known COMMON issues, others have had many random items break well before they should. Sorry but if I was looking I would want some candid feedback...

Well, the funny thing is I came over after 40 years of owning Toyotas and an occasional Honda, and bought a 2009 Accent with 65,000 miles on it, and haven't looked back yet. It's built as well as any older Corolla I ever had, and certainly as well as my 1995 Tercel; it is now approaching the same mileage as the Tercel (99,000) when I bought it and is just as tight and solid as that car.

I dare say it's even more solid than my 2005 Scion tC that has 20,000 miles less.

I guess every one has his own experience, so far mine has been excellent. I know people who think Toyotas are junk.

I currently own a 2010 Toyota, a 2012 Civic and a 2013 Sonata.

I bought the Sonata back in September 2013 and it has been an outstanding car. Its gas mileage rivals my Civic. I drive all three on a regular basis, and the Sonata has proven to be just as reliable as my other two

One thing I would look for, service records.

I could not disagree with Katin more. I have a 2012 Sonata GLS. Other than a few issues when I first got it, all fixed within the first 10,000 miles under warranty, it has been a great car. I currently have over 112,000 miles on mine. All cars are going to have issues no matter what brand/model you go with. It just depends on how big those issues are. With mine, they have been minimal. Here are the issues I've had in the 4 years I've owned mine so far:

1. Right-pull alignment issue - This was an problem on late 2011 and early 2012 Sonatas. Dealer had mine for about 2 weeks total. Finally fixed it under warranty. No problems since. And I have had my alignment checked every now and then and I have not had to have a realignment yet even after 100,000 miles of traveling.

2. Cruise control buttons stopped working randomly. Fixed under warranty. Had to have the switch module replaced.

3. Clunk in steering wheel. Replaced flexible coupler for $1.35 in parts and 2 hours of my time. Car was out of warranty at this point.

My only two current issues are:

1. My steering wheel volume buttons will go nuts every now and then. Meaning, the volume up button will actually turn the volume down. The way I fix it....I hit the steering wheel and it resolves itself. Must be a loose wire but just haven't had time to tear apart the steering wheel to look at it.

2. Small rattle in the front suspension when traveling slow over rough roads. Will look at it next time I have the car up on stands.

Other than those things the car has been perfect for me and would not hesitate to buy again. But my next car will be a SUV as my family is growing and I need the space. I'm pretty much sold on the Santa Fe LWB but will be looking at a Ford Explorer as well.

Not sure if I'd buy a Sonata again without some painstaking research and some commitments from the dealer on warranty coverage. BTW, I have an extended warranty out to 100k miles or 160k Km's up here in jolly old Canada.

Apart from the Right Pull (Covered under Warranty), and Cruize Control (Covered UW) issues I've had

a) Multiple O2 sensor failures (not covered by warranty)

b) Both front wheel well plastic shields detach at different times at hwy speed (sorry to the guys behind me)

c) Starter failure to engage flywheel (covered after some debate)

d) Transmission reset 4 times because the adaptive software runs a non optimal algorithm which, over time, results in jerky shifts (covered under warranty)

e) clunky front end (passenger side) when going slowly over bumps

f) 3 recalls outstanding, Brake, Front Spring, Engine.

I would have to see a sharp statistical decrease in ROF (rates of failure) before I would re-up on a Sonata.
