Front Hip Room my Butt

Am I totally crazy? Maybe ... I have a 2014 Sonata. Ok I admit I'm not a skinny salad eating health nut, in fact I might be just a tad wider than the occasional hamburgler. :surprise: Anyway ... God I am so uncomfortable in this car. The seat wings that go up on either side put pressure on my thighs so bad after about 20 minutes in the car. Wish bench seats were back in style.

But ... get this, Edmunds.Com advertises (from Hyundai I'm sure) front hip room at 55.2 inches. Now .. the last time I looked I had two front seats. That makes a total of 110.4 inches.

They also advertise the overall width of the car at 6 feet .2 inches. It's been over 45 years since I've been is school, but last I remember 6 feet is 72 inches.

How do we get two seats with 55 inches of hip room each next to each other in a car that is only 72 inches wide?

Little toy $hipboxes .... **** ... bring back the bench seats.

Oh yeah... I bought a pillow also, but really think about it ... Geez, 23grand for one of these toy sedans, and these brain surgeons couldn't flatten out the seat and pad it a little so we don't have to chase our seat cushions around the car on a long ride?

Not to mention, if you look at the seat frame, whatever there is of seat cushion collapses right down to the seat frame only inches under it.

Proper design would not have cost very much more money if any to this car. It would only cost a little thought. But .. again, I blame myself for not taking a longer ride before I bought it.

Reality is though ... there isn't anything out there with comfortable seats for any adults who would hold down a helium balloon with their weight.

55 inches is total hip room. Shouldn't that be hipS room? Ah, just venting, what a mistake. I wrote in another thread, a month after we bought this phone booth, I had to go out and buy an old 1993 Lincoln Town Car so I could travel like a human being rather than a sardine.

There's nothing out there anymore worth a rat's you know what for comfort. Everybody is worried about spending an extra 50 bucks a year on gas.

I'm really considering bringing this car to an interior shop and letting them go nuts on fixing this uncomfortable thing so I can at least feel halfway good about wasting 23Gs.

Sounds like you shouldn't have bought this car at all. Maybe try to test drive a car before you commit. Most half decent cars today have seats with side support. And sonata is not an exception. If anything I'd ask for more side support. And I consider myself fat and tall.

If you're looking for just a wide flat seat, you should look at american cars. probably more trucks than cars.

I traded my 12 Sonata for a Ford Fusion. Although dimensions of the two cars are nearly identical, the seats are much more comfortable in the fusion and there also seems to be more side to side room.

I almost hate to say this but I have to suspect this is an American vs. non-American car issue. Like it or not, we have one of the fattest populations on the planet -- American cars are engineered for the "larger" Americans, European/Asian cars are designed based on a more European/Asian body type.

Sometimes when you try a car you like so much other stuff you're not paying attention.

I drove my Scion for 15 minutes before buying it. Turned out it had a not uncomfortable seat, but just one that really didn't suit the car very well. So I got a driver's seat from a Celica and love it.

I drove the Accent for 50 minutes. When I first got in it I thought how uncomfortable the seat was, and after 30 minutes how nice it felt.

And I don't quite fit, either, so if someone wants to tell ME to lose my fat @$$ please come here and I'll show you where I'll put it...

hee hee...

Seating room

No sense in totally showing your ignorance here Joe. I wish the seat were slightly smaller for myself personally. If you have a problem with the seating of the Hyundai, I am sure you have had the same with every other bucket seating type vehicle.

As was stated, don't blame Hyundai for a problem which is obviously not Hyundai's fault.

Seat comfort is one of the most important parts of my decision making process when selecting a vehicle. Short term comfort is great in my 2013 Sonata (leather seats). However, this week was my first long trip in the Sonata, and after 2+ hours my cheeks started barking. I was able to get around the issue by adjusting seat back, height and lumbar support. But these seats are not as comfy as my previous vehicles for longer trips.
