5 years/100k warranty? - Not really

My Sonata has 51K km on it at less that 2 years (since the manufacturing date indicated on the steaker). During first warm days this season I figured that the AC is not as cold as it was last year. When I contacted the dealer they told me that the A/C warranty is 1 year/20K only. I contacted Hyundai Canada and got the same answer. Now they want $150+tax to refill the A/C. The question is not even about the money. It's about the advertisement. I was sure the warranty was 5 years/100K bamper-to-bamper. No, not really

I've never seen an advertisement from Hyundai touting the 10yr/100k mile warranty as "bumper to bumper". It mainly covers the drivetrain. Everything else like the electronics have a 3yr/36k mile warranty...in the US anyway.

Look in your warranty book on the back of the cover page. It outlines everything. In the use the A/C recharge is 1yr/unlimited mileage.

Some other breakdowns...again this is US so Canada may vary.

Adjustments - 1yr/12k
Paint - 3yr/36k
Radio, bluetooth, etc. - 3yr/36k
Battery - 3yr/36k (100% within 2yrs unlimited mileage, 75% cost of battery to the customer in months 25-36)
Powertrain - 10yr/100k original owner 5yr/60k non-original owner
Anti-perforation - 7yr/unlimited mileage
Replacement parts and accessories - 1yr/12k

It's always good to check out the warranty before purchasing a car. One of the things my dad taught me that actually stuck with me. lol

Some people are like Slinkies....not really good for anything but bring a smile to your face when pushed down the stairs.

i work in the motor sports industry and normal wear and tear is not a manufacturers defect, however a leak could be caused by one.

Wow A/C needs a recharge and it is less than 2 years old? When I traded my 04 Silverado in for the 2012 Sonata the truck would put out 28 degree air and it was 8 yrs old
Not sure that freon in a "sealed system " would be considered consumable

Agree, if you need to refill it, sounds like there may be another issue. My dealership did go over the warranty, so I actually knew that about the AC. That said, I did mention that I wished manufacturers would stop using the term 'bumper to bumper'. It is misleading, I agree.

  • 2012 Sonata - GL (because I wanted to shift gears!)
  • 2007 Ford Freestyle SEL - loaded, loaded, loaded (it's the wifes car)
  • 2002 Honda Accord V6 - gone but not forgotten, her sacrifice (traded for my new Sonata) will always be remembered!

Check your condenser. A projectile may have hit and pierced it. This happened on my wife's 2012 Elantra. $750 repair bill to get the condenser replaced and system recharged.

At my dealership, they made me listen to the finance guy explain the warranty and what is covered and for how long. Then I had to sign that he'd explained it (of course I could ask for clarification if necessary). That way they're covered that they know you know the warranty.
