Electronic Stability Control (ESC) Indication Light Issue

I have an issue with my Electronic Stability Control (ESC).

The ESC indication light is turning on SOLID (not flashing) which according to the owners manual indicates an issue with the system itself, whereas flashing indicates the ESC was activiated due to a driving condition (slippery conditions, losing grip etc.).

Details of what is happening:

-This solid ESC indication seems to turn on while coming to a complete stop at low speeds, most occasions were after pulling into a driveway.
-The indication light is accompanied by a faint and intermittent buzzing sound, which resembles a electric motor or servo.
-The indication light does not turn off unless I turn off the engine and ignition.
-With the ESC light on solid, pressing the ESC off button on the dashboard does not change anything, nor does the "ESC OFF" indication light come on. (This may be normal response since you shouldn't be able to overide ESC when it is active and in operation).
-Once shutting the engine down and clearing the fault, I am able to turn off the ESC with the dashboard button.
-With ESC OFF (ESC OFF indication illuminated), the fault still occurred on 1 occasion so far.
-The issue is sporatic, it has only occured about 5 times in the last week, usually in the mornings on a cold engine or short trip.

The buzzing sound in particular concerns me as it sounds like something is working or engaged when it shouldn't be. For the most part I have not driven with the solid ESC indication on (I shut the car down and reset it before driving further), this morning the light came on as I approached some traffic and I had to drive about 5 mins before I had the opportunity to safely pull over and reset it.

Has anybody experienced this? I plan on bringing it in to the dealership this week hopefully, we will see if they come up with anything.

The vehicle is a 2011 GL Auto (Canadian model). It has about 15,000km (9000 miles) on it.

Ive been experiencing something similar but different. The ESC light is illuminating when I turn my car on and I can't shift the car into gear. I have to turn off the car, sometimes repeatly in order to shift into drive. It has happened three times. Im going to call Hyundai tomorrow to make an appointment with service.

That does sound similar. On one occasion I put the car into park after the ESC light came on and was not able to shift out of park and back into gear either.

Keep me posted on what the service visit outcome is. Thanks

OK, turns out that there is a recall for a system upgrade on the 2011 Sonata's. That upgrade is for the ESC.

OP take your car in if you haven't yet.

THe ESC issue also could possibly be caused by a defective brake pedal switch. This can also cause inability to start the car. Have your dealer check this possibility.

In many cases this problem starts intermittently, and get progressively worse. This is what happened in my case. Once the part was replaced, no issues.

I recently installed a Hyundai remote starter in my Brother in laws '11 GLS and soon after his light started to turn on intermittently and the shifter would not shift out of park, but started fine. I told him while this was happening to check to see if his brake lights were working and he said they were. After a few key cycles he restarts the motor and the light is back to normal. I told him also it sounds like a brake switch issue (GLS has key no PTS).

This is correct, and the most likely scenario. As the King of Brake Switch Failures, I can tell you that this is precisely how each one of my dozen-plus failures (in the 2006 and 2011 Sonatas) have started. I had the exact same buzzing sound followed by the activation of the ESC light which was steady and not flashing.

On a few occasions the light would go out after a few days, this was only temporary and it would come back on thereafter. After a little while the car would no longer shift out of park and could not be started by the push-button switch (since the car requires the brake pedal to be pushed in order to activate the engine)...in enough time I am willing to bet this would happen with yours as well.

If this turns out to be the problem, please let us know. Good luck!

Thanks for the follow up dneg519. Do you have any more details regarding the recall or TSB? What does it entail and did you have it done?

Any chance they are referring to the Transmission Control Module TSB? I had the TCM re-program TSB completed last oil change.

Note that I have not experienced the ESC light indication since I started this thread 8 days ago.
