Cruise Control Stops Working Randomly

Bought a 2012 Sonata GLS back on July 3rd. I've had 3 instances where I'll be running on cruise control, I'll disengage it and then when I go to resume it doesn't do anything. I can turn Cruise on and off but it will not Set nor Resume. I have to stop and turn the car off and then back on for it to work again.
Anyone else experience this? I have a service appointment this Saturday for an alignment issue so I'm going to have them check this out too.

just so you don't think other's are ignoring your question/concern...

...but, i personally don't have this issue, and i can't recall other's mentioning this. you maybe a first for this one.

on another positive note: :00000732: to the forum

I had one time noticed this.

I wanted to activate the cruise and I was not able to turn it ON, I drive a standard tranny so i ad to put it in neutral turn off the car and start it back and then it worked.

Thanks for the welcome. I came from a Nissan Versa and my wife (the one that got the 2012 Elantra) came from a Mazda 3. I was big in the NicoClub forums as they were very helpful. Looks like this place won't disappoint either.
Like I said, I have an appointment this Saturday (the 6th) to have my alignment looked at...I have one of the ones pulling to the right. I'm going to bring up the cruise issue as well. I'll post back what they find.

Thanks Bingo. But no, this happens while I'm crusing at 70 - 80 on the highway. Or even 50 on the streets near my home.

I have not had that issue, hopefully the dealer can find the problem and fix it.
I use the cruise control a lot and have found the cruise control on our Sonata to be one of the best that I have used, With our Sonata, when I press set it engages right away and is set to the precise speed that the vehicle is moving.
On some vehicles I have a hard time getting the cruise to set at an exact speed or I have to press and hold set for at least a second or two before it will engage.

Good idea Snapper...I'll try that. Thanks.

@Ovityons - Yea. My Nissan Versa would always go 2 - 3 MPH faster than the speed I set the cruise to. Also, if I resumed it at say 10 MPH slower than it was set I would take off like a rocket to get back up to speed. I like how the Sonata eases back into the set speed without launching you. lol. I'm very pleased with the cruise in the Sonata...minus this issue I'm having.

Good to hear! I took my Sonata in this past Saturday...It is still there I have a loaner. They couldn't reproduce the cruise issue so I said I'd play around with it. They are still looking at my alignment issue.

Well..now my cruise control seems to be completely going crazy. Now I can't randomly cancel, sometimes none of the buttons work..even turning the cruise off/on. So I have a service appointment....again....for next Saturday for them to look at this. I've taken several video clips with my phone to show them exactly what it is doing so they know I'm not crazy.

In a way I am glad to see this is a problem seen by more people than myself. I have 2011 Sonata GLS auto and been experiencing this problem for about 3 months. I finally tool it in on the weekend to check it out and have the auto reprogram TSB done.

They politely listened to my symptoms and did a diagnostic and test drive and found nothing wrong.

So I thought well maybe a software update fixed it and on the way home cruise control worked perfectly.

So I left the car in 90 degree sun for about 90 mins and then the problem came straight back. Since then it hasn't been in the heat and has been working perfectly. I am going to monitor it and see if it is heat related. I also have the fading stereo display problem after its been in 90 degree heat reported in another thread.

I use the cruise control a lot in nearly all driving conditions so wonder if that's why I am noticing the problem where others haven't.

Let us know if you get a solution I'd be grateful to be able to take back more evidence to the service mgr.

I’ve had the problem where the cancel button doesn’t work so I had to either hit the brakes or the on/off button to disengage the cruise control, that was a while ago and it hasn’t happened since. But please let us know how this gets resolved for you

I too have a slight fading of the radio display once it is hot but nothing big. I don't plan to take it in for that unless it gets really bad. Rather not have them take apart my dash to replace it.

As far as the cruise control issue. I thought I had posted back in this thread but maybe not. I took video clips of me trying to push the cruise buttons and nothing working. I sent those to the tech. He was able to reproduce the issue. He was able to track it down to a faulty module in the steering wheel. He was able to get the module to fail on his bench. They are ordering me a replacement but I just realized that was about 2 weeks ago so I guess I should call them. Funny thing is, since I took it in I haven't had the issue again. So I'm wondering if him just fooling around with it got it to work again.

The best thing you can do, if you have a phone that can record video, is to take a couple of videos of you pushing the buttons and nothing happening on the dash (do this safely of course...I waiting until I was on less populated streets at slower speeds). This helped my tech out tremendously he said.

I just called and they actually got the part in on Friday but failed to call me. I have an appointment on Oct 1st for them to swap it out. I'll post back with what was written on my paperwork on what they did exactly.

My appointment to get the module replaced is this Saturday. Funny thing is that since my last appointment where they found the problem...it hasn't stopped working since. I guess the tech must of inadvertently fix the module by taking it out to look at it. They explained to me that the module was in the steering wheel that is failing. They ordered me a new one and that is what is being replaced on Saturday. Again, once I get the paperwork back on Saturday on exactly what they did I'll post it here so that you guys can take that to your dealers.

Also, as I stated before...the best thing you can do is take video of it while it is happening so the tech can see it. My tech Chris, who also fixed my alignment issue, just looked at me cross-eyed when I was first trying to explain what was happening with the cruise control. When I came back with video and sent it to him he finally understood and could reproduce it after a short test drive so that helped him narrow down where to look for a problem.

Ok...mine is all fixed. The Invoice wasn't very specific but the part they replaced was "96710r00 Switch-Steering Remote Control (ALL)" and "1 96440-3S000-RY Switch ASM"

I love my Sonta...I have one issue...my cruise control since day of of buying my brand new car in 2011 has worked intermittently...I have brought my car numerous times to the dealership to try to get this fixed...to this day, they could never find the issue...please let me know if anyone else has had this problem. I use cruise control on a daily basis because I drive about 3 to 4 hours a day to get to work and home...I called warranty and they said that since my car now has 70,000 miles on it they cannot do anything..I would have to pay to have it checked again...I have brought my car to the dealership about 10 times to see if they could correct the problem and I guess the problem is mine now with no resolution to fixing it.

Different cruise control problem

I've had a bit different issue, mine has disengaged itself a couple of times now, both on the freeway when it was set at 70-75mph, the first time I thought my foot maybe tapped the brake pedal, but it happened again this morning and I know that wasn't the case. I'm going to have the dealer take a look at it next time it's in the shop for the turbo rattle issue and/or left pull problem...

ok so i took my car in for an oil change and told them about the Cruise Control issue and the service manager said they cant do anything about it because they could'nt duplicate the issue. i even printed out this thread and he didnt even look at it, he immediately dismissed it because its a "global" forum?!?! anyways I'm obviously not happy with the service I'm getting. any advice would be appriciated.

I didn't get upright dismissed the first time but they couldn't really help me that much without them being able to see it. So I took a few videos of it on my phone and sent them to my tech the next time I brought it in. He said that helped tremendously because he had never seen this particular issue before. It was getting so bad by then that he was also able to reproduce it.

I have had the problem of the cruise refusing to set at any speed. Only remedy is to turn the vehicle off and back on, then it will work. This indicates that the issue isn't heat related. I had probably happened about a dozen times for me in 12 months. Not a huge issue but an aggravation for sure. Dealer just looks at me like I have two heads or something. I just sent a link to this thread to him. I haven' tried the brake pedal idea but will the next time the it occurs.
