OK, I recently noticed a fairly loud clicking noise coming from the transmission (or the gear lever?) when you hit the brakes and again when you release them (only when at or near standstill). I'm pretty sure that it's the lock for the transmission so you can't start it without hitting the brake, etc., but I never heard it before. Should it be that loud? At first I thought it was my CD's in the console hitting the side when I was braking, but realized it does it when standing still and you can feel it in the shift lever. Maybe I'm overly paranoid, but I've never noticed this in any other car.

It's the shifter interlock working and is perfectly normal. Almost all cars have this and if you listen for it you will hear it. The interlock is to keep you from shifting out of park unless you have your foot on the brake. When you press the brake a solenoid (what you hear clicking) releases the interlock so the shifter can be moved out of park.

Thanks, I figured that's what it was, it's just that it's louder than I''ve ever heard before...

Has your noise gone away or gotten worse? I am experiencing the same thing. It never made this noise when I first bought the car and has gotten louder over time. I dont think this is normal despite what the other guy said. None of the cars I've had before have made this type of noise. I'm going to bring it in and have it checked out at my next service appointment. You should do the same. It's not normal and you shouldnt settle for people or hyundai telling us that it is.

Yes yes yes. I have had this noise since day one and it is getting worse. I brought it in 4 times with today being the 4th. they finally heard it last time and said it was normal. now it is worse and they jsut called to tell me they did not hear it. I told them to try it again becasue it was happening as it was waiting to be written up this morning.
They could not show it to me on other cars when I asked so I cannot believe this is normal.

black2.0t 10-06-2011 11:33 AM

um ok. Us people telling you that it is normal are doing so for a reason. Because it is. as the other guy stated, its a shift lock mechanism that prevents you from shifting out of park when the brake pedal is not depressed.

All automatic cars have some sort of mechanism like this. Some may be louder than others but that doesnt mean that there is something wrong with the hyundai because it seems louder than others. Again, i will reiterate... It is normal and there is nothing to worry about. If you want to make sure yourself, put your head by the shifter and press the brake pedal. do that a few times and you will hear each time you do that, there will be a clicking noise.

Update: I called the dealer while my car was there and told them which part to replace per your message and they said they would look into it. Later they called to say they replaced that same part, Shift Interlock Solenoid, and all is good now. The note from the tech said it was too loose or too long or something to that affect. Now I have a nice quiet braking experience. Thank you.

Same for me. The regional manager came by and looked into it. Everyone in the shop said that it was way too loud. I brought it in the following week when the shop's main tech was in and later that day, got my sonata back, click free. BTW shift solenoids do make some noise (should be almost inaudible though), but when I test drove some other sonatas to see if they had the same click, they didn't. That's why I knew something wasn't right.

Thanks for posting this. I have noticed just the same. The click / knocking sound has got louder and when I put my hand on the shifter I can feel the vibration of click / knock.

I now know what to get checked
