Was wondering if anyone else is having this problem. My check engine light came on for the second time in two weeks. I took it back to the dealership. They told me they fixed it. They said it was the thermastat and housing. Now two weeks later the light came back on. Just was wondering if anyone else is having this problem?

One thing that will set it off is not having the gas cap on properly or leaving the car running while putting in gas. Oxygen sensor senses air from somewhere it shouldn't be coming from in either case and the warning light comes on. Or it could be one of many other things. It should be throwing a code that they can read with the computer at the dealership and go right to the problem.

Option 1.

Continue to take it to the dealer, ask for the code if you're curios what caused the light.

Option 2
1. Get a OBD II scanner.
2. Get the code from the scanner.
3. Figure out the problem by process of elimination.

I just had the light come on and my car has less then 300 miles on it, and that was before I even put in a tank of gas....so I assume it's not a gas cap issue. Bringing it in on Saturday to have it looked at. Hopefully it's something simple.

Since the light is a single signal for hundreds of different problems, I wouldn't advise anybody on trying to figure out what the problem was without an OBD code scanner. Many auto parts stores, such as Autozone, will read your codes for free and tell you the circuit that is tripping. FYI - gas cap issues throw an emissions code, where as thermostat failures are generally entirely different codes.

For the OP, what did the warranty paperwork say when you picked the car up? Sounds like if it is indeed the same exact CEL code being thrown, they most likely just reset the PCM and let you drive off. Make sure it doesn't happen again.

I owned a 2003 Elantra, now own a 2004 Elantra and a brand new 2011 Sonata. Sonata only has 1100 miles on it and the check engine light has come one. Both Elantras have check engine lights on, never got the issue resolved. Took both to 3 dealerships and after replacing multiple parts, all at my expense, I gave up and just leave the **** things on. Don't even seem to make a difference when I go through Maryland Emissions tests.
Hyundai has an issue on their hands, in my opinion.
Taking the Sonata back in so they can check it, keep you posted.

BTW - The old gas cap clicked multiple times and would sometimes not seat well. I think they designed the new ones (with the turn until it clicks once) to resolve the issues with the old ones. Very hard to put the cap back on and for it to be so loose that it will trigger this alarm. Just saying...

after having my car in 3x for the check engine light, they finally tracked down the problem. There is evidently a carbon filter that has something to do with "cleaning" the exhaust. 4 tubes are attached to this filter. While visually it looked as if all were attached correctly, one of them had something wrong with it that was creating a loose connection. Since they determined that, everything has been fine.

check engine light

I most likely have the same issue as garycgreen. My Sonata has 93,xxx miles on it. All maint. has been done by dealer. Check engine light came on February 2014 they told me it had to do with gas cap. I had already check that issue out and know to turn at least twice. May 13, 2014 check engine light had been on for week dealership couldn't get me in. Dealership worked on for 2 hrs. They told me machine picked up a large emissions leak yet dealership unable to find the leak. They reset the code and told me if came back on call them and they would give me a loaner while they worked on it. May 20, 2014 2.5 hours short of one week the check engine light is on again. Taking it back in Tuesday, 27, 2014.

I loved this car in beginning now I have questions.
