1999 Sonata GL immobiliser issues

Hi all,

As the title says - 1999 Sonata GL 4 cylinder.

The start of the problems was a FLAT (VERY FLAT) battery. Tried to jump start it and now I can't start it. The fob's little green light comes on when the button is pressed BUT it has absolutely no effect on the car. Zilch, nada, jak...:-(
When I turn the ignition on the warning lights flash and then go out. From this position of course the car won't start - the starter motor doesn't operate. Pressing the button on the fob does nothing at this point.

The fob also does NOT lock or unlock the car.

The fob has the little "Z" on it.

Given the above I'm starting to think that something is fried but the question is what.

Thoughts and workarounds ?

Cheers,
Mark F...

Hi Mark.

Where in the world are you located? In UK/Europe, the immobilizer doesn't cut out the starter motor. It cut's out the fuel injectors, so the engine will crank but not fire. What warning lights are flashing when you switch on the ignition?

Sorry, I'm not sure how the immobilizer works on Australian cars. Regardless, from what you've said about the dash warning lights, it doesn't sound like the immobilizer (not a factory one, at least) is the problem. Assuming you have a fully charged battery and the battery terminals are clean/tight, it sounds more like you have a main power supply or ground breaking down.

I think you'll need to do some voltage tests to track down where the problem lies. I'd start off by connecting a voltmeter between battery neg terminal and a clean, paint free part of the car body and see what sort of voltage you get with the ignition on once the warning lights go out. If you have a high voltage reading (> 0.5Volts) then the body ground is the problem.

If the body ground is OK, connect the meter between body and fuse 10 on the dash fusebox. See if the 12V supply to fuse 10 drops out when the lights switch off.

Let us know how you get on.

Mark,
Please update your profile. Easy to do. Click on "user CP" in upper right of screen (on smartphone use PC mode). That will take you to a page where, on the left side of the screen under “Your Profile” heading, click on the "Edit Your Details" link. You should update the year, model, and engine of your vehicle. Also, please include your general location city/area, state, and country. We have members all over the world. Different countries may have differences in models and laws/regulations. THANKS!!!

Did you check your grounds?
Have seen where a badly corroded grounding strap from the engine to the vehicle body can cause the starter not to crank
Check the voltage from the Battery B+ to starter B+ .. see if there is 12 volts
Then check voltage from the engine block (starters use the engine block as the ground) to the Battery B- ... anything over 0.5 volts indicates a problem

There is power where it should be and the grounding is all good. ALL voltages are as they should be where they should be. There are NO blown fuses either in the under bonnet or under dash fuse boxes.

It's got some crazy immobiliser hidden somewhere which I'm quite sure if it can be bypassed would allow the car to be started. I'm pretty sure that when I tried to jump start it something got fried and my guess is the immobiliser - either it was fried or it lost its programming.

An NO, I didn't connect the donor battery the wrong way around when I tried to jump start it.

Car won't start or crank...

Greetings, From your posts I would go with a dead battery. Did you just charge or replace the battery? Will the headlights operate? If they do turn them on and then have someone try and start the car. If they immediately go to dim or completely off, that's a sign of a dead battery or a bad cell.

As has been stated, check all your grounds and connections to the battery & chassis. Unless I missed it you haven't replaced the battery, correct? That is my input. Let us know how it goes. Can I say battery any more...

OK now we're getting somewhere. All of the other tests and voltage measurements are spot on and OK. Battery is a freshly charged one and is good - it can crank a Diesel enough to bleed the fuel system OK.

Where will I find this ETAC unit ? I assume it's the box that's covered in rotten, sticky, horrible goop that may have once been foam rubber under the drivers side dash ? I'll have a lash at it later on - I've just got home from work and need coffee and food and wine before I tackle the car...:)
