2003 Hyundai Sonata 2.4L

2003 Hyundai Sonata 2.4L 157,000Miles

Problems/History:
1. The car started shivering for few times, seems like losing power then power comes back immediately. After a week, car stopped while driving. But I can restart it right away. I took it to an auto shop and got Direct Ignition Coil replaced. ($600)
2. Next day, the car still stopped while driving. This time is worse, it wont restart. I took it to an auto shop and got alternator replaced. ($460)
3. Next day, the car still stopped while driving and won't restart. The auto repair shop people came and sprayed starter on air filter and it started. This time, they told me the Fuel Injection Relay needs to be replaced. They want $500 for it.

This time I'm not going to spend any more money at that F* auto shop. I looked online, an EFI Relay is only $50-$70 (They told me the material is $340 and labor $160).

The current problem:
The car can start and run, but it stops sometime while driving. The shop people told me there is no codes. But I saw the Check Engine light was on when the car stopped. Also, they told me fuel pressure is ok (about 40) and the problem is "Fuel Injection Relay"

Questions:
1. Is "EFI relay" the problem? Where is EFI relay located on 2003 Hyundai Sonata 2.4L? Behind the dashboard?
2. I replaced fuel filter by myself about 1 month ago. Would that be the cause of my problem?

Hyundai has had problems with the CPS(crankcase position sensor) which would duplicate your problems. Many times it does not throw a code. Have you changed your timing belt lately? The reason I ask is that replacing the CPS on your 2.4 engine requires almost the same effort as changing out the timing belt. If the belts needed changing, it wouldn't cost much more to replace the CPS. If you had the 2.7, you could do it yourself.

Thanks for your reply. So you mean the problem would be most likely the CPS. To change it, requires almost the same effort as changing out the timing belt. I know it costs about $700-$800 to have timing belt changed, mostly labor cost. I checked online. A CPS costs only about $50. If it needs $700 to have it replaced. It's really a lot for me. I have spent $1,000 and the problem is still there. Sigh~

I'm just saying that with your cars age and mileage, the CPS is a very high candidate. That part is almost a maintenance item nowadays. (ask SBR711) What those repair shops did, didn't. Perhaps you could get the repair shop that bent you over- do it at a vastly reduced cost? I know my santa fe timing belt change was $450.

You been getting "milked" for all you worth..

Random stall with 2.4 and restart (maybe stall again) or breif jerk/stumble while driving is good indicator the Crank Position Sensor is faulting..

To replace, plan on complete front end overhaul... Timing belt, 2 drive belts, balance shaft belt, hydraulic tensioner (DO NOT RECYCLE OLD PART),, crank angle sensor, add labor for basic timing belt replace, add extra for P/S pump R&R to route the sensor wiring properly.

Sometime they set code,, majority of time they dont set code.

Alternator does not make engine run, it is just along for the ride to make electricity to put back into battery and run electrical.
