The last two times I filled-up with Gas (No Topping Off), the car wouldn't start. I turned the Ignition Off and then tried again, wouldn't start: on the third attempt it started, ran rough for a second and then everything was fine. No check engine light, No Codes, No pending codes. The car ran normal til I needed to fill up again - same identical problem. On a side note, each time I did notice that after the fill-up, the Gas Gauge needle was above the Full line. Also, the car has a little over 100,000 Miles on it without any major repairs. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

sounds like you got to build up pressure in the fuel system to get it running. i would suggest changing the fuel filter.

You could have a blocked vent in the filler neck so when you fill up you take up all the space in the tank so there is no place for the extra pressure to do.

2 things you can try.

when you fill up try starting the car without the gas cap on.

number 2 try to turn the car to on for a few sec before you start the car to let the fuel pump time to build pressure.

Hi -

I have a 2004 Hyundai Sonata and I had the same exact problem. I researched every forum on the Internet and figured out that it was the PURGE VALVE that needed to be replaced. Of course, I took the car to the dealership and was confident in what needed to be done and they tried to sell me a diagnostic testing package for $159. I said NO and asked that they replace the PURGE VALVE and they did.
Once replaced, I did not have this problem anymore. I realize that your vehicle is a 2001 but this could be the issue for you as well. Good luck!

Sounds exactly like a purge valve. They are not that hard to replace yourself if you are co inclined.

I have an 03 Sonata and I had the exact same trouble. It ended up being the purge control valve. $38.00 to buy the part from the dealer. Solved my problem.

2.7 or 2.4 ??

2.7 ---> refer to vacuum label under hood,,, look at hose at top center of throttle body, follow that hose around back of intake plenum to the purge valve..

Question Pictures with Purge Valve?

On my 2.7 Santa Fe I took the top cover off the engine. I could not find the Purge Valve even after I looked at pictures in my factory, (Bible sized repair manual-yellow). It show the part, however not where it was located. If anyone has a picture please post, or maybe a little more details how to find it

Thank y'all, Patrick.

As called out previously.. refer to vaccum label under hood.. see the hose on the top of the throttle body ?? (first picture)..

Follow said hose from throttle body to the purge valve (behind surge tank--see second picture)
