Hi.
I have a 2004 Sonata with 70,000 km on it (43,495 miles). I noticed that the manual says to replace the fuel filter every 4 years or 84,000 km or 52.5x1000 miles. In terms of months, I'm way over due. I'm close in terms of km as well. I was going to replace it when my car is in for service tomorrow, but the dealer parts dept said that the fuel filter is located inside the fuel tank, and that while the filter itself is cheap, the labour to install the part will be several hundred dollars. He recommended not doing it until I see a problem, but at the same time, I don't want to ruin my fuel pump because that will be more costly! What I didn't ask was -- is there any way for them to check the filter? I tend not to like to leave things past when they should be replaced.

Filter is in the fuel pump module inside the fuel tank..

If you going to pull it out, you might just replace it.. there is nothing too other than a black chunk of plastic thing with filter element inside.. after you disect the module to get at it.

... but when do you recommend that it be replaced? Do I wait for problems? Do I do it now? Do I wait for 84,000 km?

I cannot recommend a service interval... we do not have it listed in any of our mileage services..

When I was Toyota, we did the external canister at 60 I think... but I have well over 250 on my current Toyota canister filter, no problems here.. not sure I want to try it now, even though it is mounted on bulkhead out of harms way..

My sonata is quick to crank and slow to catch at 100k. I'm guessing it's the fuel filter. Wondering where you went with your concerns?

Fuel filter will cause overall driveability concerns..

Does the car run fine when running and driven ? Yes, then you do not have a fuel filter problem.

Hard starts on Sonata (I will assume 2.7 V6 ??)... look for the fuel pressure regulator to be leaking fuel into the #6 intake runner a wee bit after shut off...

I have posted this in the past, but I'll write it again ---- run engine till good -n- hot.. just prior to shut off, I want you to pull the vac line off the #6 runner and set it up over top of the PCV hose, shut off engine... watch the end of hose and PCV hose for fuel come out of vac line and wet the PCV hose... might take a 5-10 minute if it does leak.

If it does dribble out liquid gasoline, replace the fuel pressure regulator.. the fuel burping into the intake runner floods the engine, so we end up with a rather long cold crank time, and similar when hot.

Thank you for the rewrite. I imagine some don't have time and/or proper word selection for the search. I tried "03" and "2003" search in sonata forum to weed out other years. Refined searches weed the "good stuff" sometimes as well. What would be invaluable would be for someone to start publishing books based on the forums. A preacher said once, "If you journal and write a page a day, in a year you will have a 365 page book, wow, who didn't know that? For now, I will pay close attention to your posts and post history Equus, by the way I read your book, had a great long impact on me...very cool username for the auto forums! Off to check my fuel system,,,thank you, Equus.

Yes, it's a V6 sonata with 2.7L. Tried the fuel regulator test and was negative , waited 15 min still no fuel burp or wetness on pcv hose. The regulator looked old and i'm wanting to replace. Perhaps the regulator fails intermittently, not all at once? Maybe test again will reveal a positive.

I want to replace fuel filter too, located "door" on floor in trunk and saw a great post with step by step instructions.

Still wondering what might cause a quick crank/ slow start scenario.
Should I just get the car inspected?
