P0440 EVAP error.
Just a note, I have a 2001 Hyundai Elantra GLS (w/manual transmission) and is between 110k-120k miles.
Probably a year ago the CEL came on, in the summer I let an auto guy run his code scanner on it and he told me it was a P0440 and the parts I could need replacing. I eventually bought my own code scanner and same code. I cleared it out, drove my car awhile, and sure enough the CEL comes on again w/ the same error. I buy a new proper gas cap, reset it, drive some more and the light continues to come on.
I never overfill my gas tank and I always tighten the gas cap several times it starts clicking.
So this "limits" the issues down to the Purge Valve, Canister, and any kind of hoses that run between these things, right? I also heard about some kind of sensor on the gas tank? Are there other things that can fail in this system?
Where can I get these replacement parts? How much do they cost? How much would it cost to get someone else to do it? I tried finding the purge valve myself (I hear it's between the engine and firewall) but wasn't too sure if I saw the right thing (and I'd need to take the air intake off the engine or something to really get to it). Where the heck is the canister? What is its official name?
