Headlight (lowbeam) issue

2006 Elantra

I've searched for this or similar issues and have read a few threads but I could use some help with a headlight issue.

Last night I was getting ready to leave work and my headlights stopped working. When I started the car and rolled the switch forward they flickered on very briefly and then turned off abruptly. I tried turning them off and on and restarted the car, neither worked. All parking lights work, tail and brake lights work and highbeams work. I ended up driving home with the highbeams on. This morning I picked up a new headlight and tried it in both the driver and passenger side with no luck.

I read in another thread something about replacing the relay. How involved is that? Does it involve cutting/splicing wires or is there a plug on both ends where it connects? Any idea how much a new relay runs?

I'm just looking for a few low cost/time possible fixes to try before paying a mechanic. Are there any other thoughts on what the issue might be? I'm convinced it has somethign to do with a fuse, relay or wiring. Thanks for your help!

Update - this evening I checked the fuses and they're fine. Using the diagram on the underside of the fusebox lid, I found two fuses marked H/L (HI) and H/L (LO). Since the highbeams are working and the fuses were identical I switched them but the highbeams still worked and the low beams didn't.

The diagram didn't have information about the relays, I'm still curious about those if anyone can help out.

Edit - It looks like what I've been calling the fuses are actually the relays.
