My car has been revving up to around 2-3k rpm upon startup... the mechanic says it's a faulty idle air control valve. He tried to clean it but to no avial--the car still revs up occasionally.

I can't find the IAC valce in the Hayne's Manual. Might it be called something else? The idle speed control actuator, perhaps? Is this is job for an industrious do-it-yourselfer?

The shop wants almost $300 for the part and $100 for labor... The IAC at at O'Reilly's is $115.

Thanks for your input!

it's simple to change having such a small engine and alot of room to get to the intake. It's near the throttle body usually behind it. I'd vote go get one from oreilleys and put it in yourself

the local dealer will sell you a haynes manual?
btw he said he still couldn't find it IN the Hayne's manual meaning he already has one.

in my experience the Hayne's manuals are all too vague, I like the Chilton's manuals but the funny thing is they are made by the same people! If you can get a look at a Chilton's(not sure if they even offer one) you may find more info.

Is there a sucking sound? start the car and spray carb cleaner along intake points and see if engine changes attitude, if so you've got an intake leak, it's quite common with these or any vehicle for that matter because an engine is basically an expensive air pump. wrong amount of fuel to air and they don't want to run right. check back with results.

Check your local library for a Chilton manual. They tend to carry them, though you might only be able to make copies of the section you need, since they generally keep them for library use only. We tend to fear oil spills and grease on those books, and they're quite popular with patrons.

The Haynes Elantra manual calls it idle speed control actuator or ISC. Part stores call it the idle air control valve.

You all in bad shape,, part in hand, locate the part that look just like it.. in this case with the 2.0 Elantra, it is on the plenum just beside the flange where the throttle body sits.. 2 bolts and a paper thin gasket is all there is to it..
