HI

My 98 Accent 150 RSI has started making a tic tic noise on startup. The noise is only there for about 2 seconds before it disappears. Is this normal/acceptable? I have heard this type of noise om my 92 Mazda 626 2l with 202 000 kms on the clock. The Accent however only has 91000 kms on the clock. I think that due to winter almost here in South Africa, the colder temp might play a role. This will be my first winter the car is in my ownership.

Has anyone else has this noise in theire accent's?

Thumbs down

This most likely is a lifter noise. It is considered not to be a problem for a lifter to be noisy for a few seconds after cold start (as per Hyundai shop manual). The Accent lifters are rather tiny, and get sludged up over time. A can of WYNN’S engine flush will clean them out again.

The noise is deffinatly comming from the valves. The noise is not there everytime/ It appears about 3 outof every 10 times I start the car. It also only in the moring when the temp is cold as we are enterring winter.

The car has done about 1500kms since the last service at 90000kms. If it is not a problem according to the shop manual, then I am not going to worry.

Thanx

Yes, it is not a problem. However, I would do an engine flush with WYNN’s at the next oil change, to desludge the engine for longevity reasons. You will also notice a slight fuel economy increase.

Canadian Tire, man!

If you're in BC, I'd suggest Lordco - they've got EVERYTHING.

About 10 days ago I did my first long road trip with the car since the tic tic started. Covered about 600 kms, averaging 120 - 140 km/ph crousing speed. It seems that the road trip has somehow cleaned up the engine as the noise has now dissappeared after the trip. I know long distance trips is usually good for engines to burn clean and open!

I've had two Accents(an amazing '95 and my current POS "all new" 2000), and each did this. But paying close attention to when it was happening, I discovered that it only happened when the engine had been cold for awhile(like in the morning after sitting overnight) AND the oil level was a bit low. But it never did it at all with a full crankcase.

My conclusion was poor oil circulation causing the lifters to chatter. Once the oil began flowing after a few seconds it would go away.

So yeah, I'd say it's normal and not a problem.
