Can this be replaced? Wife broke the latch off hitting it with her purse.

This happened to me too. Has anyone been able to replace just the latch, or do you have to replace the entire lid assembly?

looking at the diagram from HMAservice, it seems pretty confusing.
I ended up super gluing it (gorilla glue didn't work) and it worked good, until I put a little too much pressure on it, and it broke.
Fixed it 3 times, still not permanent, so I just put a small tab of velcro. I used a big tab of velcro, but it put too much pressure on the bottom latch, and I didn't want that to break

Any more ideas?

I spoke to the main dealer here in Oman and they said I'd have to get the whole unit as they'd too tried replacing the knob/lever and were not sucessful.
They said there were some clips on the inside which once dislodged could not be put back into place.

I had this same problem and replaced the latch myself today. Using a thin flat head screwdriver, gently pry the top lid apart. Then, using a philips screwdriver, unscrew the latch mount and remove the latch/knob. Using the springs from the old latch/knob, reassemble latch mount. Secure latch mount and pop the lid back in place. Very quick and easy job. Took under 10 minutes.

I just found the latch online. It cost 88 cents but $11.50 in shipping so I ordered 4 for when I break it again (LOL). Here's the link: SPRING - ARMREST UPPER LATCH. Hyundai Sonata (2008 - 2010) # 846643K000
The upper and lower latches appear to me to be identical. Here are the parts numbers though in case the link above goes bad by the time you view this.
Bottom latch: 84661F
Top latch: 84661E
Bottom latch springs: 84663F
Top latch springs: 84663E
Like I said, the latch itself appears to be identical. However, the springs are different. On the link above, the latch comes with the springs for whichever you order. Since my springs were fine, I ordered the top one for $0.88 rather than the bottom for $3.63 (I may be a few pennies off on this number).
Looks like an easy fix once I get it in the mail. Good luck to you all.

Our less than impressive service department told me they couldnt repair ours since it was the double door console with the lower cooler / heater compartment. I asked if he could pull up any TSBs to see if their was one for the latch. He said there was no need and he had "seen lots of them broken" and advised me to use Velcro to hold it closed. When I asked if he knew how I could access the latch he said no they just replace the entire console and parts alone would be over $400.00.
I went home and after 30 minutes had repaired it myself with a short piece of light gage steel and a small screw to hold it in place. I see no way it will break again and I saved at least $500.00. Most importantly I learned I will not trust our dealers service department to work on our VeraCruz for any reason.

Part is available

My service department said I'd have to replace the whole lid at $400+. I even looked at the parts diagram with him and he said it wouldn't work to order the part. I ordered the part (#83549 in the diagram) and replaced it myself for $20 including shipping. VERY easy replacement. The only issue is that I got the tan colored piece when I needed black. I can't see which one is the black piece. Either way, $20 is much better than $400+.

BTW, I have a 2008 Veracruz.

I ordered this part: KNOB. Hyundai Veracruz (2006 - 2012) # 846663J0206T

I think the part above is only for the sonata. I ordered it and is definitely not for the Veracruz. It should be part #69114 for the bottom latch that I broke. Here is the webpage for the Veracruz parts.
KNOB. 2009 Hyundai Veracruz # 846663J120OR
Also, the exploded view of the parts book is attached.
I will post photos of the repair next if possible.

First you must remove the two screws near the hinge. Next use a very small straight screwdriver and gently pry the bottom panel open. Next remove the four screws from the piece holding the latch (knob) and remove this piece to expose the latch. Remove the pin from the broken latch and install the new latch. Take note on the direction the spring is seated. Place the spring on the new latch and install the pin to hold it is place. Put the piece that holds the latch in place back together by replacing the four screws. Next replace the plastic bottom panel and be sure to put the new latch through the hole in the bottom panel. Install the two screws near the hinge.

Curious, the plastic you are prying back is the plastic that is on the bottom of the 'top' container, the part where you can see the 'clip' and where its broken, correct? I'm sorry if this seems stupid, but my dad is in Cape Coral, FL and I'm in San Diego, CA. Normally he would figure it out and fix it for me, but it's driving me insane, and I need it fixed. But I'm NOT paying $400 to replace the whole thing!!

I didn't have to repair the top lid latch, but I think you would pry that piece open just like the one on the lower lid. I broke the lower lid latch. I have photos but I am having difficulty putting them up. I think they are too large. Too bad you weren't in Cape Coral. I am in Naples.

Awesome! Thanks for the pictures as well! I will be back in Cape Coral in a few months when the husband deploys! Do you know about getting the same color? Sorry it took me forever to respond I kind of forgot the name of the website...whoops! The picture you posted of the actual item in the package it came in helps too because I was worried I would order the wrong piece. Going to order everything now!! =) You all are awesome!

Replacing the top latch

Hi,

I need to replace a broken TOP latch. Can anyone explain how to separate the top half (the padded section) from the bottom half of the top lid??

An earlier post indicated separating the two with a flat head screw driver. Since the sides of the padded top wrap around I wasn't sure if the prying should start in the back or along the sides.

And also are there any screws that need to be removed in order to separate the two top halves?

All help is appreciated!

Disassembly of console for upper latch replacement

Hi,
I took some pictures as I disassembled my console. Sorry for the quality, I had to decrease the quality because the file was too large. Hope this helps.

watch out for broken latch mounts on the lid it self. There is one screw holding the latch . in place. Underneath there is a mounting bracket (mount) that snaps off also. Thios is what happened on my 2009 sonata. Dealer said you must buy the whole lid for $99.00.
because they do not sell seperate parts

Please note be sure to check that the holding tabs (mounts that hold the latch in place) are not broken also. Located under the cover that holds the latch itself'. This is what has happened on my 2009 sonata. Dealer states I must by the whole assembly For $98.00 as the do not sell the parts seperate.

Just as an update, the small prongs that broke while I was disassembling the console didn't affect anything once put back together. Also I decided to order a new latch instead of using sheet metal. It was around $6 and was very easy to install. The new latch has been fine for several months now.
