Shock/Strut Knocking

Hello all,

Just curious if anybody else had issues with their rear shocks/struts? I have an '11 Limited FWD with 26k miles. I purchased it as a certified used off a lease, and when I did there were no noises produced on bumpy roads.

Over the last ~5k, a sound has developed. I was able to narrow it down to the left rear initially, and thought it might be an electrical connector that was loose between the body and interior cargo panel. The sound was such that I thought it was plastic on plastic.

During a closer inspection with the help of my dad, I found the left rear shock/strut as the source. With my fingertips on it, and the rear suspension being actuated up and down, it was making a tapping sensation and the noise could be heard at the same time.

I will be scheduling an appointment, hopefully to get both rears replaced. I find it odd that a part I've never had to replace on any of my other vehicles has already started to give up after only 26k.

Haven't noticed a deteriorating ride quality yet. It is most notable when taking a grade difference on the left side (where the bad one is located), like pulling into a driveway, parking lot, or angled railroad tracks.

Of course, I didn't isolate it until after taking off interior panels and exploring sound eliminating/deadening products and methods...

I had my 2 rear shocks replaced at 36k km because of a clunky noise. (2010 Tucson Ltd) Now at 50k, still no clunk from the rear. My dealer said at that time that it was a common problem. They didn't perform alignment at that time and 1 month later, my rear tires start to used in the inside so I had to pay for an alignment as my dealer said it can't because they change my rear shocks ... but I highly doubt about it.

Dealer confirmed the source of the noise as the shock assembly, but it was the upper shock mounts that were going bad. Parts should be in shortly for both rears under warranty. Will advise if they have to do the shocks too. Since the diagnostic appointment, they have continued to get louder.

Finally found the source of the ultra annoying hatch banging. Removed every freaking panel, secured every single thing that could cause noise. After half dismantling the car, putting velcro on the cargo cover so it doesn't move, etc., banging noise remains. And yes, checked under the car to see if anything was loose, and wasn't. Was suspecting internal shock issues, but didn't sound like it could be it. Relieved to finally find the culprit. Will call tomorrow for an appointment. Will also demand an alignment, even if I have to pay for half or something. Also have an annoying rattle in the center console, but don't want now the front dismantled for that, so will let my daughter live with that (she doesn't complain).

Here is something I noticed looking at my daughters friend's 14 Elantra. It was making this thumping so I turned the wheels as far one way as they would stay and started shaking things. It took just a couple seconds to see what was wrong and it was dead obvious. There is a vertical link about 8" to a foot long. It's right behind the tire. Hers was loose as a goose which explained the thump every time she hit a bump or went over a rise in the road. You don't need to be a mechanic to feel this either, its quite obvious . just grab and shake hard. If it is shot it will rattle around and of course it should be rock solid.
Her car had under 30K never been wrecked or trashed a tire. I priced the link on Amazon and it was around 30 bucks. I didn't change it though it surely is stone simple requiring only a couple end wrenches. I can't see it being a safety thing. Just some annoyance that will drive you crazy. With those low miles it has to be a factory defect. In all the old cars I owned drove or fixed since 1973 I never saw any car with a link that loose.
