Active Eco

After about 1500 km and serious disappointment with gas mileage, we finally turned on the Active Eco. It stayed on for two days - then we flipped it off again because of the impact it had on power. In fact - I consider it to be dangerous.

We have a problem with intermittent sluggist starts from a stop. I'm talking about putting your foot on the gas pedal and (reasonably) expecting the vehicle to move according to the pressure (like it would normally do) - only to experience barely perceptible power for several seconds. This happened in intersections a few times where my response was to press harder on the gas pedal (cars approaching) - and after another second or two lag - the vehicle suddenly gained power that equated to going from zero to 60 in a hurry.

Has anyone else experienced this problem?

At 1500 klicks, the engine it is a long way from 'broken in', imo...however, if you peruse this forum you will find few that ever attain that mystically high EPA highway rating, and the car seems to waddle along somewhere in the low to mid high 20s, regardless of driver effort. (Mpg vs lt/100, but you get me point...)

As for 'Eco', not sure what 'Active Eco' is; we just drive ours and the Eco light comes on regularly as soon as it is in near top or top gear, fwiw. Our Eco light blinks off on any throttle tip in, and at any cruising speed above ~75 >.

If you don't like Active-Eco turn it off............
We don't have it on our '11 Tucson but do have it on our '12 Elantra.
The jury is out on it's effectiveness to help with gas mileage.......probably much more so in city driving as it messes with the transmission shift points.

On the highway it is much less effective if at all.

It does affect performance and acceleration quite a bit as it shifts much sooner keeping the RPM's much lower and thus the lack of performance.

On the Elantra I plan on checking back to back MPG numbers with it on/off to see if it's worth the decreased performance.

I don't think that the light is anything more than a prompt that you are driving in a way that helps fuel economy. It in no way prevents the engine from revving freely. If you have sluggish starts from tip in i would have it inspected. I have noticed on the highway that once the speedo reads above 120KM/hr or so the light goes out but drop back below that and it goes on again and the L/100km number improves leading me to believe that the light is as stated above.

He has Active Eco............your talking about the Eco dummy light on Pre-2012 models.

Yours seems just like my 2012 Limited. When I use ECO mode the start is very sluggish, then around 2nd gear it pops in like a turbo and the accelleration is similar to the way it accellerates normally. I usually only notice the difference in the ECO mode in accellerating from a dead stop.

Buerkletucson - I did turn it off IMMEDIATELY after the second time I found myself like a deer in the headlights of oncoming traffic - with no confidence that my vehicle would move quickly enough to get me through the intersection. I drive almost exclusively in rush hour city traffic, so timing is everything at most intersections - and no amount of gas savings is worth the risks of having unpredictable power. (BTW - it's not a big deal - but I'm a 'she' )

jjpetroski - Your description makes me feel almost relieved as that's exactly my experience. And yes - I also have the 2012 Limited with Nav. Perhaps it's something I can use on the highway this summer...

Absolutely Agree.......
Yours sounds much worse than the Active-Eco on my wife's Elantra. The power is decreased but not like you describe on your Tucson.
She's been using it all winter and no issues like that. I'd still like to see how much it actually saves in MPG's. Probably not much.
I wouldn't use it either if it was that bad.
My 2011 Tucson just has the Eco light and no Active-Eco.

Guys......no grunting, scratching, or farting in the presence of a woman. Be civil now....

New related question: Doe it save gas when just sitting in traffic, or does it only work when accellerating (by dumbing the throttle down)? It could be used for that 10 minutes you have to sit and wait for a train for example...

Good idea jjpetroski! I don't usually spend too much time idling for long periods of time in traffic because Victoria is a small city. But while waiting for my husband after work this winter, I could literally watch the digital mileage counter going up, up, up, (along with my blood pressure ) while I was parked with the engine running to stay warm. In the interest of my blood pressure and peaceful evenings, he now walks home after work (the 20 minute walk is good for both of us ), but I wish I had thought to use the Active Eco back then.....
