Hi all,

so here we go with the crazy talk... I have an 07 Azera Limited 3.8L and its a great car besides the sunshade not working in it. anyway, a little while ago it would randomly click one time when you turn the key to start it. everything lights up and all is well but only one little click. here is the odd part. if you use a regular set of jumper cables without a safety chip in them it will start right up and might start fine for a week or do it the very next time you turn the key. what i know for sure is good is the alternator and the battery. the battery is always at 99 or 100% when this happens. not taken of but still on the car ive had the starter checked and they tell me its good also. ive even had the after market remote start checked to see if that could be an issue... and all is well. any help would really be appreciated.
Thanks, Nate

The test is using test light. One side on battery negative
The probe side to engine block.
Try to start engine when it won't start
If test light turns on then bad ground

Up grade your ground wire from battery negative to chassis ground
Then check ground wire from engine block to chassis

Assuming this is a no crank, no start
When it doesn't want to start and while you have someone turn the key to start,
Take something (broom handle, rubber hammer, something) and whack the starter
If it starts then you can suspect the starter

Theory is that the starter has a dead spot on the commutator
The bigger the dead spot; the more often it will not start
The smaller the dead spot; the less often it will not start
Intermittent no crank, no start

It can be verified also by checking the voltage on the starter while turning the key to start
If it has the proper voltages and still doesn't crank then the starter is no good.
(Assuming he battery is in good condition)

...95% +/- of the time, issues are (root cause) mechanical ...what's happening when you start ? ...you turn the key, right ? ...if all other electrical things check out, investigate the ignition switch ...not too hard to replace if that's what it is ...pretty common from what I've read on this and other forums; however, (DISCLAIMER) although I've never replaced it on my car, I HAVE had the occasional "no start/click only" in a New Hampshire (USA) winter, but, a repeated, quick (and COMPLETE) turn of the key has eliminated that issue from occurring (last occurrence was 5 years ago) ...I have replaced my battery once (2013) and I will again in 2018 because 5 years of constant, daily use is simply good sense IMHO (what with all the active and parasitic electronic loads).

Not sure if my experience/symptoms are similar...just sharing.

Good hunting.

...FYI - I currently have 284,000+mi (US) on mine and have had it since new ('07 LTD)

Cheers,

at the moment I replaced the starter because it was completely fried on the insides so I was told and it looked very bad... anyway, at this point its still starting fine. im not sure what caused the starter to do that but I hope the problem is fixed.
