For the past 6 months (!) the engine warning light on my Amica stays on. My local friendly mechanic has replaced the ignition coil which made the light go off for a bit. Then the spark plugs were replaced which made it go back off for a shorter period but solved the other problem. This is that when it is damp the car has no power until it has warmed up and 'chugs' quite a lot. On a dry day I take it on runs of 300 miles with not a hint of a problem. I know these descriptions are quite simplistic but any suggestions on how to make the light go off for ever. If I need any parts can anyone recommend an online shop that dfoes them cheaper than main dealer?

Thanks

Dave

the only way to get to the bottom of this problem is to get the fault code read at your hyundai dealer

Look forward to hearing if you have any progress on this one - my wife's car has the same problem! Another - possibly unrelated - problem is that the rear brake light bulbs fail on a regular basis, apparently due to a short on the wiring.

Just spotted this thread and am interested if anyone has got a solution yet. The same thing happens on my wife's Amica and two dealers couldn't find anything wrong. Also a bit sluggish first few minutes in cold mornings, then fine. Only advice given is to remove the lamp !!! Anyone done this or know how to remove the dashboard ?

Me too.
On our (Spanish) Atos the engine warning light stays on despite no obvious engine faults.
I think the electrics generally are suspicious though, as cent. locking works some weeks and not others.

Is there anyone out there who can explain the rash of permanent engine warning lights?

Well the light is still on (!) but I think part of the problem was the rubber tube that guides the wiring between the car and the rear door (when you lift the boot up look to the top left) the protector had come out and the wires had been bending back and forward till things stopped working!!!

Now I have a new problem. The cigarette lighter provides enough power to charge my gps receiver but not my mobile. The charger works in other cars!!!! If my phone is almost at no battery then it will charge it . Any thoughts ?

Our dealer charged 25 quid plus VAT to run the diagnostic check and fix the fault last year on our 2001 Amica. The light was due to a short on the emissions purge (oxygen sensor) in the exhaust, code was P0944.
We also had the light come on and stay on due to an ignition fault, I didn't get this diagnosed as I'd already sussed it was ignition/electrical related. We had some winter starting problems and misfire/chugging when cold or damp. The mechanic at the dealer was really helpful and advised that the most common causes for the light coming on are:
1. a blocked air cleaner
2. old or cracked ignition leads or HT lead.
3. Ignition coil
4. Oxygen sensor in the exhaust.

I changed the plugs and the light went out for about a week but then it returned so I fitted new plug leads and this fixed it properly. Apparently the plug leads from around 2000/2001 are failing about now, they start to let the damp seep through. A new set of aftermarket leads from the local auto spares shop were about £20, I forget what the quote was for Hyundai original leads, but they were dearer.

One other thing to be aware of is that you have to disconnect the battery for about 20 minutes for the fault to code to be purged from the memory, otherwise the engine warning light will stay on even if you cure the problem. If your car seems to be running OK but the light is staying on just try disconnecting the battery, leave it half an hour and restart, you may find the light goes out.

Good luck to you all, let me know if you have any joy and if anyone knows where to get a workshop manual for an Amica I'd be grateful if you'd tell me.
Cheers

ive had the same problem with my 2002 amica. replaced both the ignition coil and spark plugs and the problem keeps recurring. Ive ended up figuring out that by soaking the ignition coils with wd40 this seems to keep the problem at bay. It seems to me that there is a design fault in that wet weather seems to cause this problem regularly. I know its a stop gap solution so if anyone has any better ideas id be glad to hear them but short of replacing the coils and plugs regularly im all out of ideas myself.

Dont gorget old fashion maintance, im old enogh to remember points and condensers.
When misfiriring in damp or cold situations its usually:
Ignintion wires,ignition cap and rotor.
Change plugs when doing the cables.
keep your coil clean, wipe it off.

Amica Manuals are rare. I have 145 Hyundai manuals in my workshop and I think I could sell the Amica / Atos ones 10 times over. Ignition based problems are common on the Amica's

After 2 years I still get the same problem with the electrics - dry weather no problem - wet weather shudders / stalls until warmed up (like me). Changing the plugs / leads fixes for a while - warning light still on (!) LH passenger door wont open from inside or out. Hissing noise (probably brake servo). Broke down last year in heavy rain, took back to garage and leads / plugs dried out worked great for weeks then problems crept back in. Still, its like a faithful old dog you can't get rid of!

Hi

very interesting reading about all these probs with the electrics on the Amicas. Me and the wife have just bought one each.

my wife's car is fine but mine has the chugging, missing prob in the wet until it warms up when it drives like it should!

I changed the plugs and I am going to change the leads and coils anyway. After that I will just use WD40! Oh and my engine warning light is on too :)
