Our dealer charged 25 quid plus VAT to run the diagnostic check and fix the fault last year on our 2001 Amica. The light was due to a short on the emissions purge (oxygen sensor) in the exhaust, code was P0944. We also had the light come on and stay on due to an ignition fault, I didn't get this diagnosed as I'd already sussed it was ignition/electrical related. We had some winter starting problems and misfire/chugging when cold or damp. The mechanic at the dealer was really helpful and advised that the most common causes for the light coming on are: 1. a blocked air cleaner 2. old or cracked ignition leads or HT lead. 3. Ignition coil 4. Oxygen sensor in the exhaust.
I changed the plugs and the light went out for about a week but then it returned so I fitted new plug leads and this fixed it properly. Apparently the plug leads from around 2000/2001 are failing about now, they start to let the damp seep through. A new set of aftermarket leads from the local auto spares shop were about £20, I forget what the quote was for Hyundai original leads, but they were dearer.
One other thing to be aware of is that you have to disconnect the battery for about 20 minutes for the fault to code to be purged from the memory, otherwise the engine warning light will stay on even if you cure the problem. If your car seems to be running OK but the light is staying on just try disconnecting the battery, leave it half an hour and restart, you may find the light goes out.
Good luck to you all, let me know if you have any joy and if anyone knows where to get a workshop manual for an Amica I'd be grateful if you'd tell me. Cheers
