OK, I have a question...what are those extra switches for? I keep hearing that if you don't have the fully loaded Sonata, you don't have all the switches, but I bought one with ever friggin' option, and I still only have like 2 of my switches.

What are the VAPS et. al. supposedly for?

I think someone researched it and said they were for the Korean models only (?)

VAPS = Vehicle Air Purifying System

Just googled it

I'm guessing that the switch controls the level to which you want to employ your VAPS. Low/Auto/Off.

Sonata LX in the US has the VAPS, right? But it's called AQS, and it's only auto. I'm assuming that's what the VAPS switch is for on the Korean model - to regulate the VAPS. I don't speak, read, or write Korean, so that's just my BS answer.

Edit for Hatter: Didn't catch your post before I submitted mine. I believe it was the guys at s_o_n_a_t_a_s_p_e_e_d.com (without the underscores) who researched it, and it was only on Korean vehicles. BUT...you can get it on your North American Sonata if you hook up the switch and wiring, and have the diagnostic scanner tool program it in for you. Supposedly all the programming is already hard-wired into the ECU and it's just a matter of unlocking it, kind of like the auto door lock settings.

From the list of buttons (they include the seat warming buttons), and the fact that Google reveals VAPS to be the air filtration system, it would appear that the US might have moved some of the buttons from the left dash to various other parts of the car?

It doesn't really matter as long as I'm not missing something my car should have.

Actually, with the missing buttons, I'll be able to put some of my own in the slots if I ever finsih my navigation project.

LOL they're nice aren't they. I'm still trying to convince Mrs. MC that they're necessary. I never did really like the look of the stock ones.
Still, money's money...and I'm already going to be blowing a chunk of cash at Wal-Mart on Friday picking up my Mobil-1, windshield foil sunlight blocker (putting on the foil!), and Mr. Clean Auto-Dry.

I'll try again in a couple weeks when I haven't bought anything for a bit.

:innocent:

Sorry to disappoint but the US Sonata LX doesn't have the VAPS, hence the button blank. VAPS and AQS are different systems.

The Sonata's AQS (Air Quality System) "is part of the LX trim's automatic climate control system. When the AQS button is depressed, the climate control system automatically monitors the air being drawn into the cabin from outside the car. If it detects smelly emissions (from a diesel bus, for instance, or the stench from a roadside cattle farm) it automatically switches into recirculation mode." from Edmunds' Inside Line

The VAPS, or Vehicle Air Purifying System, is an ionic-type air purifier mounted between the back speaker grills on the rear parcel shelf. It's purpose is to clean dust, smoke, etc out of the cabin air. I believe it is a Korean-only Sonata option.

... don't forget to add that when using the AQS the air is filtered. Through a five layer, activated charcoal filter I believe. And that these should be changed every 10,000 miles or every year ... depending on your driving environment and how often you use the AQS.

Good point, Hatter. And you can still install the VAPS switch from the dreamka4u site, because as the site says,

"Even though your car doesn't have these switch functions, you can install them on your car.

Your car will be looked COOL~

Your Frieds think that your car is Full Optioned Luxury SONATA Model."

BTW, those black chrome door handles ARE sweet. Good link.

Yeah, each market seems to get slightly different options with the Sonata. Maybe we get the VAPS in Korea because our 2.0 litre four banger is the same price as a loaded LX V6 in the States. Honestly, I'd much rather skip the VAPS and have the US price instead.
