I can't remember where I saw/heard it, but I believe we have timing chains. The Owner's Manual doesn't have it in the replacement schedule. That bothers me.
My first car (3 decades ago) had a timing chain break. Now that I think about it, my next car had a timing belt break. Fortunately, the valves didn't get crushed, the hard part was getting the timing right. Cars today couldn't be repaired.
I replaced the timing belt on my former Honda twice. Had it for 15 years, 194,500 miles. Followed the replacement schedule listed in the Owners Manual.
While I was at the Hyundai dealer shopping for my Sonata, a guy was there waiting for his new car to replace the one that got destroyed when the timing chain on his Elantra broke. Maybe the Elantra has a belt?
Anyway, I am interested in what others say. Because chains can still break. And I am one to keep my cars a long time.
