My brake lights and back up light don't work. The bulbs are fine, the fuses look OK, and I replaced the T/L fusable link with the horn one to see if that was the problem, but they still didn't work.

Any ideas?

Jae

Brake lights, park lights and reverse lights are 12 volt activated, via the switch so actual fault could lie within the grounding wire for the rear lights, remove rear boot trim and you should find a grounding line check for possible cracks or separated joints, also check for decayed wiring, the copper will look either black or green/blue. If you need the exact location I can assist further as my Hyundai electrical troubleshooting manual is accurate.

if it's not a fuse, then its a severely good chance it is.

Did both tail lights cease at the same time, or had the problem commenced on one side first? In same cases the globe plugs can detach, check the wiring looms first then check the globe holders to determine if the lights are making contact. Also check the globes. Is the high level mounted brake light operational. Either in glass or on a spoiler depending on your vehicle.

I had a similar problem with my accent 99... I was driving at night and suddenly all lights went off, only my front right corner light was on.. I verified fuses and bulbs and they were fine... Taking in consideration that it was late.. i tried this... I connected a cable to the positive of the battery, took of my left corner light, took the postive cable and connected the cable to the one connected to the baterry. and Voila.. All lights on again..... I got home and disconected the cable.. The next day i checked everything and it was fine, all grounds were fine..

What i did i took the positive of the working light, connected a relay , and then connected the relay to the other non working side and everything worked fine.....

A few Days ago a decided to connect everything how it was, just to see.. and everything was working again... Strange thing....

Dear jaew,

Both the brake lights and the backup lights went out at the same time? That does indicate an improper ground. The brake lights are actuated from the switch under the brake pedal under the dash, but the backup lights are actuated with a switch on your shifter rod. Two different source of power in, however, the rear lights do share one ground out. Check your ground connections again.

Where exactly is this grounding cable?

I have the exact problem: Brake lights are out (both), but the Third Brake Light (LED on spoiler) works. All other lights/signal lights, headlights, driving lights, etc. work. No fuses are blown. Bulbs are not burnt.

So I am guessing the problem is with the ground as well... Is it in the bulb assembly area (you know, behind the felt-lined cover with 2 screws), or elsewhere in the trunk area??

Thank you.

Hi,

I am having the same problem with my 98 accent. Both the backup lights and hte brake lights are not working. It's not the fuse. I can't figure out where this ground wire is that you speak of. Could you please be a little more specific about where it is and how to replace/fix it once i have determined that it is faulty?

Thanks so much for your knowledge. We all truly appreciate it.
