When I picked up my LX, I noticed the rust on the rotors which went away after driving/braking.
It rained last night and this morning the rust is is there again.

Is this normal?
Anything to correct it?

It seems strange to see orange in the wheels.

Thanks,
S

It's normal. Every Sonata with 17" wheels at the dealership has it after a rainy night.

Talked with them about it, they said basically it boils down to the rotors being exposed because of the open wheel design. Said they thought a cover placed on the inside of the wheel would make it go away, but I think this would look absofrigginlutely stupid. Luckily I didn't say this aloud, and repressed laughter long enough to get out of there.

Hey, maybe someone else wouldn't think so, though. Beauty in the eye of the beholder, and all that.

I just had my Rotors replaced at 400 Miles. My Car sat on the lot for months, and the Rotors looked terrible!. I had a metallic noise coming from a Wheel, and when the Dealer resurfaced the Rotors the Car didn't Brake, just vibrated to a stop. I went back and had the Rotors replaced in minutes. Looks great now.

Washed the car yesterday and saw the rust on the rotors right after. Drove it to another spot and the rust was gone. It's normal for the water to dry on the rotors in a rust color I guess.

cya.

I find rusty rotors really frustrating, especially with rims that expose a lot of the brakes. You'd think that if we can put humans on the Moon or get draft beer from a can, we could bring rotors to the People that don't rust. :)

I don't mind so much if the surface of the rotor rusts where the pad contacts it, as this is gone after a few turns around the block. But when the parts of the rotor that have no contact with the pads but are still highly visible turn rusty, it makes me think my car company is just cutting costs. How about a little heat-resistant paint or plating to keep everything looking cleaner down there?

Unfortunately, nothing is better than good old gray cast iron for brake rotors. Friction and wear properties are hard to beat, and resistance to heat warpage is unsurpassed.

Maybe something like titanium would work, but that would raise the price of the car by ~$2000.

Maybe they could dope the brake pads with something that would wipe a rust resistant coating on the rotors, but that is probably a way off. The rust is considered a "cosmetic" problem, so I doubt it's getting much research.

Ferrari has those on some models, I recall reading a brake job on those cost several thousand dollars!

I think y'all are talking about ceramic rotors. The ones that glow red from heat ? But yeah, on ours the surface rust is completely normal. Even humidity will cause it. Covers won't help prevent it really, other than keeping you from seeing it ... but it will still be there. The only thing those covers are really for is to prevent brake dust from getting on the rim. Short of stainless steel rotors, we're pretty much stuck with the rust.

I suppose you could get ceramic rotors but you'd be better off sticking your foot out the door to stop the car. Those don't work properly until they're red hot and glowing.

actually F1 does use carbon fibre discs madder. I think elsewhere in racing ceramic brakes are used but F1 being the "world series" of racing, they have the best of the best ..

I know this is :offtopic: but I rather have 1 of those cool F1 transmissions than the carbon fiber brakes. I can't wait for the technology to trickle down to passenger cars. Hearing them shift up and down flawlessly at full throttle is a thing of beauty. :)

I doubt CF rotors and pads would last as long as our stock ones. I'm sure they're made for maximum, no-compromise stopping power with no regard to longevity.
