...Went to see my barber this morning.... He saw me getting out of the Sonata and started talking about it...
He was telling me about 2 other clients of his who were so enthusiastic about their new Sonata... One of them, he says, is a guy who's NEVER satisfied with ANYTHING...
But the interesting part is, a cousin of his works as a engineer at GM headquarters in Detroit. That guy told him about how impressed engineers at GM are with the new Sonata...
As a matter of fact he, my barber, is heading to the Hyundai dealership next week with his wife to have her test drive the Sonata.

Doesn't surprise me. Hyundais are really catching on in general, and it's all grassroots support. They don't advertise as much as they could (or probably should), but I tell everybody I know how much I love my Sonata. My next door neighbors just bought a Santa Fe after I got them to the dealership, my dad will be getting an Azera, and a buddy of mine at work just got a 2006.5 Optima (technically a Kia but essentially a Sonata - he got black also and said he just didn't want to have the exact same car as me).
Toyota seems pretty worried about the Sonata - see how much they've been hyping their new Camry? I've been seeing a ton of Sonatas on the street, too. No way GM could ever come close to making something as good as the Sonata for the price (or probably even at any price).

As soon as other manufacturers start slagging Hyundai, you'll know they've arrived! It could get quite dirty, because millions of dollars are at stake. Hold on, be strong, Hyundai!!! It's WAR out there!

My uncle had a '93 Altima. Back then they LOADED that thing to the hilt. Even had a "Heads Up Display," (???) for viewing your speed on the windshield. That Altima was wicked-cool, loaded, and an awesome bargain just like this year's Sonata. Oh yea, back then, a new HUD windshield cost over $1200 to replace. OUCH!

Hmm....what was the nature of that Heads Up Display? Was the display somehow integrated into the windshield? That's the only reason I could think of that would make it cost $1200.
Most heads up displays, as employed by GM, involve beaming the speed from the dash and reflecting it off the windshield so that the driver sees it while driving down the road - you see the reflection from the display on the dash, but there's nothing special about the windshield.
If his system was like that, then I'd say he got taken for a ride on the $1200 windshield replacement. Don't tell him that, though, 'cause he'd probably feel bad about himself.

The Sonata always has been Hyundai’s best kept secret. It was always a comfortable highway cruiser, with low rpm’s at high speed, durability, and reliability. My old 1990 Sonata (2.4L 4-banger) lasted 436000 km, without major drive train repairs. My newer Y2K Sonata V6 has already 146K km, and will have to be in my drive way for some time to come, till I can afford a new one. The Sonata is the only choice for me.

QUOTE(mc229 @ Apr 8 2006, 07:31 PM) The Maxima, an overpriced underachiever? That's a bit harsh in my book. Maybe it's not as good of a deal as the Altima is, but you have to take a step back and consider that the Maxima was the benchmark of the economical family car with some zip under the hood for many years. My mom had an '89 and that thing really moved, compared to anything out at the time. It spawned the whole "4-door sports car" ad campaign and made other manufacturers take notice.
That kind of reminds me of where the Sonata is now - it's breaking new ground in terms of the great features you get for its low price. Hopefully it will signal an emerging trend in the marketplace (high feature content for low $).
Now if you want overpriced underachievers, try on the generation of Camry that's getting pushed out the door. Yuck.

The magic word in your statement is "was". The only feature that I can truthfully say is better on the Maxima is the interior. My cloth interior really isn't anything to write home about.

QUOTE(scoobydo @ Apr 8 2006, 09:31 PM)
They sent 3 Japanese gentlemen over from California to take his car out for a test drive. He said that he told them about my Sonata and mentioned that the ride was better than his Maxima. According to him that really made them come up on point.
It is nice to know that the word is getting out to the manufacturers of these overpriced underachievers.
At least they try to do something. I made "good" comments on the Hyundai survey too and I didn't even get a call from them. And a local dealer keeps telling me that all the noises from the back "are normal for this car"
