"Carmakers Accused of Using Double Pricing Scale"

I don't want to be negative but I thought you all might find this interesting, especially considering there have been a couple of threads here lately dealing with US/Canadian prices.

Compared to the US available models, prices for the Sonata in Korea range from about $26,000 to $29,500 US for the 2.4 litre 4 cyl, and if you want a 6 cyl, there's only one model choice (comparable to the US LX minus cruise control) at a whopping $34,500 US.

As Hyundai gains North American market share and improved brand image, do you think they'll feel the pressure to raise US/Canadian prices, cut warranties, or maybe both? For those still considering buying a Sonata, maybe the best time is now. I'm certainly encouraging my dad in Canada to get in while the deals last. It's a lot of car for the money, especially with the prices you pay there.

imo i think it's a no brainer that a few years down the road the sonata will be priced like a camry. right now is the start of Hyundai building their brand name and establishing a rep. once they've proven themselves it would make sense for them to increase their profit margin.

You're right...the Sonata could move up in price to match the Camry, but only in a few years when the next generation comes out. I'm pretty sure that this current gen is safe, because they wouldn't raise prices too quickly. That would place too high of a premium on new cars, and drive more people to buy used Sonatas. Not that any of us would have a problem with that when we go to sell or trade our 2006s, right?

I think Hyundai will be comfortable with their price points, pretty much throughout the current model line, as long as they don't add too many significant upgrades that could drive up price further (nav, XM radio, 263 hp Azera engine, etc.).

As for why the Korean market supports higher prices, take a look at the American market - we buy Fords and GMs and most self-respecting Euros wouldn't be caught dead in one of those. :P

Look at the V6 price in Europe ... no LX but options (leather, moon roof, changer) just about of EUR (=Euro) 30,000...

I see your point, but I still don't think Hyundai will jack with the US market too much while they're gaining momentum.

For an example of how US markets can function independently of world markets, look at gas prices. Now stop laughing. Look at them closer. Even though our prices suck currently (to us), they're still way lower than what people are paying anywhere else.

Five years from now, Sonata may sell for the price of CamCord. No sooner.
If I'm wrong, I'll be laughing all the way to the bank when I trade in my '06
