Hi All,

I just got my 2006 Sonata LX last week and I really love it. Only one problem I have noticed is that sometimes not all time but sometimes when approaching a full stop like for a red light I notice the wheel sometimes shakes a bit when coming to a stop. Is this normal?

NOT NORMAL! Get back to the dealer. The braking on my sonata is smooth as silk,in fact for me this is the smoothest braking car I have ever had.
Wonder if you may have been in a situation where the brakes got extremely hot and you might have some rotor warp,my ford taurus is real bad about this and I have to have the rotors turned on a regular basis. The sonata with 4 disk braking is a vast improvement over my ford with only front disk brakes
Get your dealer to check it out.

I've got a 2000 Ford Taurus that I had back to various dealers for that front end shimmy. The dealer that I bought the car from finally fixed the problem. Said it was bad back brake drums! Put a new set of tires on and the shimmy is back - worse than ever. That in a nutshell is my reason for not buying another Ford product. They know about the problem and refuse to do anything about it. If Detroit wants to sell cars they need to be a lot more customer service oriented.

(By the way, my Sonata brakes straight line with absolutely no shimmy)

I have had this exact same issue and my dealership determined that both my front rotors were warped and they are replacing them.

Could be belt slippage or a knot on the tire. Both are pretty common.

Probably warped rotors. My wife's santa fe had the same problem with 1500 miles on it. dealer replaced them and have no problem since.

My rotors are a little bit warped also, noticed it probably around 6000-7000 and now I'm at 9100. I will probably see if the dealer will replace them, it's way too early for warped rotors.

could his vehicle have been test driven ? An aggressive test driver on a hot day could warp the rotors I bet - or possibly when they test drove it out of the factory in Alabama ? Not likely but possible I suppose ...

Years ago I owned a Subaru with manual transmission, which means I had to use the hand brake, which caused the rotors to warp on a regular basis... I loved that Subaru, it was a great car, except that nuisance. I heard later that my problem was common with many cars.

the handbrake is attached to the rear wheels - you warped the rear rotors ? I have never heard that before - usually it's the fronts since that's where the bulk of the braking and heat build up is done.

The car had 11 miles on it when I got it, but I never noticed any warping until at least 5000 miles... and it's not very noticeable unless I'm braking hard like when I'm going down a steep hill. These rotors are at least better than GM ones... I had a Camaro that was warped twice within 12000 and not just a little bit warped, either.

To help avoid warped rotors you really need to have the lug nuts hand torqued to the same setting. If impact wrench or something else is used, the different pressures on the lugs help contribute to the warping problem. If you have the shimmy, and you have your rotors either turned or replaced, make sure the lugs are hand torqued properly. This was a big problem in the 90's with the Ford Taurus SHO folks, and that was the way we corrected our problem then. When I got home from the dealer with my Sonata, that was the first thing I did. No shimmy so far.

One of these days I'll go get my torque wrench back from my dad so I can check mine... I did have my tires rotated at 5000 miles.

Hosing your car off after a lot of driving (when rotors are hot) can also cause warpage.

Hey All,

Thanks for all your help with my problem I took it to the dealership today and sure enough the front rotors were warped and were replaced. They are also going to be doing the rear ones as well. The guy there said this model is noted for that but problem solved.

Thanks
