Hey guys, i am in Baton Rouge, LA and i called my dealer just now to schedule an oil change. I inquired about the price and he told me 26.99 USD plus tax, which is fine by me. I then asked the service technician what kind of oil was included in this oil change and he told me 10W30.... I know the manual calls for 5W20 and he told me it would make absolutely no difference. Any thoughts on this. I know this topic has been discussed over and over again, but im looking on specific instances where someone has gotten their oil changed by the dealer.. Thanks guys!

That seems a little odd to me. Wouldn't you also be voiding the warranty?

If the dealer does it I don't think it voids any warranty. Just make sure they put the brand and weight of the oil on the invoice/receipt and you should be covered.

The little chart in the owner's manual shows 10-30 is OK to use in hot conditions. I used to live in BR, and it's plenty hot enough to use 10W30!

I hate to rain on the parade, but oil is definetly not oil. Yes it all starts from the same place, but what happens before it ends up in the little bottle makes all the difference.

This topic has been picked a part many times before so I won't beat a dead horse, but I will say that if you are not going to keep you Sonata for more than the warranty period, then let the dealer do what they may. But if you feel your car to be a little more than a mode of transportation, you might consider buying your own oil and taking it with you to the dealer. Any good dealership will use your oil provided it meets the factory specs. And pretty much all brand name oils do.

Again, type and such is up to you. I know there is an entire cheer staff on this board devoted to Mobil 1 (myself included). So if you have any concern, spend the $12 to $25 for 6qts of oil you like. Oh say like 5w-20 or 5w-30 Mobil 1.

Yeah,to him it doesn't.

5W20 flows through an engine faster at start up when the oil is at it's thickest viscosity.Your bearing will appreciate it

So how do you have proof that they actually used your oil in your car? Not to sound too paranoid (and I probably am, I'll admit it), but what's to stop them from just putting some random crap in your car and keeping the good stuff for themselves? Keep in mind that I don't know the people working on my car (I'm sure the service manager probably isn't the one changing my oil), so therefore they haven't really earned my trust.

Believe me, getting the right oil put in your car sounds great. I just want to make sure it really happens, and I don't think they'd probably take too kindly to me standing around and watching them put it in there.

Any suggestions here on how to tactfully make sure they use your provided oil would be great. I swear that I'm not trying to be a wisea$$, and I'm sorry if it sounds as though I am.

The good thing about my dealership is that from the waiting room you can see every car in the service area while they are working on it and it would be obvious if they were pumping the oil in from the dispensers they have and not emptying the bottles that you provided...thats just here in Baton Rouge though...

the only thing you're buying by spending twice as much as you should for oil is a piece of mind, but if that's what it takes...

..I'm sure the oil tycoons appreciate it

yeah I plan on taking my car in for it's first oil change at the dealer, supposedly they check over everything on the car to ensure nothing has come loose or anything.

After that I'm going to change to Mobil 1 at my 12000 km change and do it myself from there on out. Just keep the receipts each time and I can't see why it would void your warranty.

Do you really believe that?
All they will be checking other than Oil-Filter is your pocketbook!

Worried about the right oil in your car if the dealer does the oil change?

Don't let the dealer do it! It's relatively easy to do it yourself - at least on the V-6 where the filter is on top the engine. And its absolutely the only way that you will know you are getting the right oil, a fresh filter (and o-rings and pan washer as called for). And that things are torqued up right.

In the Wash DC area, its a real crap shoot to have just about anything serviced by others. One of the well known service chains (initials J.L.) was written up for even reusing antifreeze - an item that doesn't even cost that much.

OK, so I've come to the conclusion that I'm going to bring my own oil in to the dealer when I get it changed this coming weekend, and I'm going to pick up some Mobil 1.

Should I get the 10w30 since hotter temperatures are upon us, or should I get 5w20 that's recommended in the manual?

I asked the service manager and he said that they always put in 10w30 when you get the "official dealer oil change," so it's only been getting 10w30 up to this point, apparently.

Thanks for the site, getter...
I went there, found it a bit hard to navigate to be honest, but eventually found what I was looking for.

Since it only rarely tops 100F here in the summer but often gets below 0 in the winter, I think I will get the 5W20 Mobil 1 assuming I can find it before next Saturday. I only hope that having used generic dealership 10W30 for 26000 miles didn't screw up my tolerances to the point that I might have trouble with the 5W20.

mc229 Had plenty of mobil1 5w20 at my local walmart this morning
Hope there is one near you

As far as the change over to synthetic at 26000 you'll be just fine.in fact you may even notice the engine runs smoother than it did
