ESC is not an option - it is standard on all Sonatas.  As far as repairs go, any time you add more actuators, sensors, and computers, there is the potential for things to break.  I would guess that some of the ESC parts are rather expensive.

The ESC should be invisible until you get into a situation where it is needed, such as a skid or impending roll-over, then the car actuates the brakes individually and cuts power in an attempt to bring the care back into control.  As noted above, some Sonata owners seem to notice a difference with ESC off in normal driving - I personally do not, and I tend to push the car pretty hard in my "normal" driving.  I do find it quite useful (and sometimes entertaining) in winter driving.

Sorry MrDisco - I was not aware that ESC was an option north o' da border. In that case, my decision would depend on a few issues:

1. Do you get ABS if don't opt for the ESC? If they are coupled together (I would guess they are), I would probably get the ESC, since I like ABS, escpecially in climates with snow.

2. How much does it cost? A few hundred extra - no brainer. More than 1K extra, gotta give it more thought.

3. Will it impact reliability? I don't think so, but just in case, it's covered for 5yr/60k miles.

4. Does it work? Seems to work pretty good in the snow when I get the car sideways. It will probably do the job if I ever get in any real trouble.

5. Does it improve safety? Proabably, but if you don't get ESC, you still have all those airbags if things really ugly (unless the airbags are option in Canada)!

ESC is packaged with the compass rear view mirror, auto climate control, and a few other ditties, called the Premium package. $1400 extra. I like mine a lot. Well worth it.

In the winter I like yanking the e-brake in a turn and getting totallly sideways - the ESC goes nuts trying to restore order!

You must be great friends with the Chippewa Falls constabulatory.
(Making mental footnote to avoid other Sonatas around the corners of Chippewa Falls in the wintertime)

:offtopic: In the summer, watch out on those same corners for a black-leather clad hooligan on an old Yamaha XS11.

yes here the GLS Premium is the top end model and comes with:

Adjustable pedals
Automatic climate control
Air Quality System
Electrochrome auto-dimming mirror w/Home Link and Compass
Trip Computer
ESC/Traction Control

The list price is $1400 (cdn) above the price of the GLS V6.

To answer previous questions the GLS does come with ABS, air bags.

I can get the Premium model for $1295. out of the above feature list the ones that interest me are the ESC, Climate and AQS. just not sure if its worth $1300+tax :|
