I have a klunk noise when 2nd gear engages only on a cold start. Note only on a cold start and second feels like a surge or a dead spot before it engages into 2nd gear. After that the noise goes away but the the surge is still there for the most part. The noise doesn't happen when I shift from 1st to 2nd. The dealer has acknowledged the problem but has said that their engineers say that the ABS is engaging. I'm having them keep the car overnight and have it up on a lift so one of the techs can be underneath to pinpoint the area. Is there anyone else who has had this problem. Also the transmission fluid was a quart n half low .

Thanks

You can find here quite a few posts regarding BOTH your issues:

The CLICK you hear/feel when you start driving (around 8mph) is simply the ABS self-check. What's typical to the ABS self-check, is that THERE IS NOTHING TYPICAL ABOUT IT... Sometimes you hear it louder, sometimes it's hardly there... Sometimes it sounds one way and sometimes the other way... This is not only the Sonata, it's in ANY ABS equipped car (my wife's Accord does the exact same).

The "hasitation" or "Dead-Spot" or "Hickup" between 1st and 2nd gear have been dealt with here... It's the way the Sonata trnsmission was designed, since many have mentioned it, and it is suppose to go away after couple thousand miles, as one of us has noted lately.

So, maybe you shouldn't worry. Enjoy your new car!

I think people tend to worry too much about their new purchases, especially a new car. But unless there is an obvious indication that there is something wrong, I'd suggest not go to dealers to check here and there for some minor issue such as a little squeak, rattle, clicking sounds etc. Sometimes more trips to dealers' service department result in more problems.

Moriah you said "Also the transmission fluid was a quart n half low" does this sound odd or wrong to you?
To measure when HOT is the correct way and to have a half-quart low would show some shifting errors.

It was wrong for the dealership not to have checked the transmission fluid before I left the site. Oh well thank goodness for the warranty.
