My 1998 Atoz won't go into 2nd, 4th or reverse every now and again, called the RAC today but (typically) when they got here it was going into gear. I can put it into the gear but after that it just rev's up-called Hyundai garage but even they didn't know, can anyone help me please? It's working fine now but I don't know how reliable it's going to be! Thanks.

Hi Rosalind - I too have an ATOS but its auto, zero problems so far except for intermittent radio operation.

But I have experienced your problem with various other cars; usually there is a flexible link between the gearshift lever and gearbox, which is there to isolate vibrations from the engine/gearbox assembly from your hand (and reduce noise too) and that can sometimes give problems as it is bonded rubber glued to metal. If it starts to part, you think you get a gear, but it just creates some slack, usually in one direction, which explains why your problem is when you move the lever back, not forward. I suggest you get your RAC man to scrutinise that item !
Cheers from a warm West Indies. Lovejoy

Hi ROZ !

this problem should not be expensive to fix if it just a flexible link breaking, my experience is Hyundai parts are very reasonable in the UK, try your nearest dealer, they will have a microfiche showing the part and can quote a price, also they will advise you what time it will take to replace, less than an hour, I hope !!
Failing that, buy the item and have a less expensive garage or mechanic replace it.
Good luck! Where are you in Uk, near a big city?? Cheers from Lovejoy
