Was wondering if anyone has had any problems with engine ping when accelarating. I have the V6 petrol model. I have been using unleaded fuel and was told by the dealer, after a recent service, that I should use Premium or the Shell 95 unleaded fuel. I tried this but still get a bit of pinging from the engine, although not as bad. I was wondering whether anyone has had a similar problem.

Look forward to your comments.

Regards

Ray

To me it sounds as if one or more sensors are out of range.

Pinging usually stems from lean fuel mixture and/or erratic ignition timing - which can in it's turn cause damaged spark plug tips that will emphasize the pinging.

The sensor signals should allow the ECU to compensate/adjust combustion parameters to eliminate any pingning.

My first point to check would be the knock sensor.

It is definately not meant to be so and there's a risk of harm, to the engine, if it's run for a long time under these conditions.

Hi there, I have a petrol manual that also pings. There are no knock sensors. I was told to use higher octane fuel by the dealer as no adjustment is possible. I usually use 95 octane with 98 for towing or beach driving. It seems the engines are setup for the automatic so there is too much spark advance on the manuals. There are some threads on this on Australian 4wd terracan site. I did find that a magnetizer on the incoming fuel line reduced the need for 98 octane as well as gave slightly more power and torque. No pinging on 95 octane basically.

If so, Hyundai must issue an updated software rev. for these ECUs. Very soon!

Put me down. I live in a hilly region and the first thing I noticed was the pinging. I took it back to the dealer - they said there was nothing they could do and suggested I run hih octane fuel.

I have run 98 octane since and very rarely get pinging. Today we had a hot day and I was towing a trailer full of sand and I got tiny bit of pinging.

10:1 compression and no knock sensors --> high octane fuel only simple fix.

I've got exactly the same problem. My engine pings when under acceleration. Problem is pretty much eliminated when running premium fuel.

I've talked to the state technician in Western Austtralia for Hyundai about this problem. He suggests that there might be a faulty sensor or leaking vacuum seal somewhere.

He agreed that there shouldn't be any engine pinging, even with standard unleaded fuel.

I've just had a major service done which didn't fix the problem, so I'll be going back and insisting they have a proper look (Yes, I did tell them about the pinging before the service).
