The tanks are 58 litres with reserve. If you let the diesal settle in down the pipe, you should be able to squeeze in up 65 litres.

However, I have a sept 06 model and can get 65litres in. My previous 05 petrol model, could ony fit in 55litres!. Itsatusconmatey's 05 diesal seems to get only 58 litres. I think the later models have a bigger tank.(maybe)

QUOTE(ukjim @ May 15 2006, 10:18 PM)
Hi everyone,

Back now with my new test results since my fuel package mod was applied. Some may recall my original fuel test over a year ago, which you can see at the start of this enormous thread. So we can make a direct comparison!

Anyway, here are the gory details  :P

Model: Tucson Diesel CRTD CDX
Purchased: Dec 2004
Mileage on Clock when Modification Package applied: 15700
Hyundai package applied: New instrument cluster console + new Drive spline + Engine Control Unit reprogramming.
No other modifications.

Notes:
1. Filling to the brim, means exactly that. Fill until absolutely no more fuel could be put in. I could see the fuel in the angled filler cap. No bubbling, and no drop in level. FULL !!!
2. I am UK based hence measurements are for UK miles per gallon.
3. Previous tests one year ago resulted in 31 mpg best efforts, and roughly 340 miles on a tankful. Although this wasn’t filling to brim as I have done for these new tests.
4. New tests performed April/May 2006 so temperatures are between 10 and 20 degrees Celsius.
5. Tyres are as originals fitted when vehicle purchased.
6. Figures calculated and checked using http://www.euronet.nl/users/grantm/frans/fuel.htmlhttp://www.euronet.nl/users/grantm/frans/fuel.html
7. Before each test, both Trip Meter and MPG Meter were reset to Zero.

TEST 1: EXTREME ECONOMY

Description:
Beginning immediately after leaving the garage once the mods had been applied.
Filled completely to the brim. Then followed 2 weeks of cautious driving in an endeavour to obtain the maximum fuel efficiency I possibly could. Rev range 1500-2500rpm where practical and safe. Use of best and most economic gearing, ie 5th whenever possible, almost to the point of labouring the engine. Throttle back on downhill slopes.
I do little town driving. 50% of my daily travel (32 miles) is on the A1 (Great North Road), a reasonably long straight, level road, travelling STRICTLY at 65mph (manual, no cruise control, very rarely to 70mph). 50% is on back country roads, travelling at 40mph maximum in 5th gear. This route is exactly the same as my original route test right at the beginning of this forum post thread, one year ago. Driving was as light-footed and smooth as possible. 2 and a half weeks of driving like this drove me nuts!

Upon empty tank, refilled to brim and recorded details as follows:-

MPG Meter in car reads: 33.1mpg
Litres to refill: 67.00 = 14.73 UK gallons = 17.69 US gallons
Total mileage covered on this tankful: 542.4 miles = 872.9km

Fuel performance equates to:

36.82 UK mpg or
30.66 US mpg or
7.68 l/100km or 13.03km/l

Improvement since 1 year ago (31mpg): + 5.82mpg

TEST 2: JUST GO FOR IT, DON’T CARE

Description:
Pedal to the metal. Similar routes to above but also some long journey driving. Generally 70-85mph on main A roads and occasionally 90mph. Back roads generally 45-70mph depending on conditions. Generally the way I normally enjoy driving, not excessive.
Upon empty tank, refilled to brim and recorded details as follows:-

MPG Meter in car reads: 29.8mpg
Litres to refill: 66.19 = 14.55 UK gallons = 17.48 US gallons
Total mileage covered on this tankful: 467.5 miles = 752.36km

Fuel performance equates to:

32.13 UK mpg or
26.74 US mpg or
8.79 l/100km or 11.37km/l

Improvement since 1 year ago (29mpg): + 3.13mpg
Well that's it. I am pleased with the overall improvement.
Obviously the MPG Meter shows between 2 and 4mpg short of the real MPG figure.

Also I have not noticed any loss in performance (i.e. acceleration).
The other point I think we should remember, after all the pessimists and
so-called 4x4 "experts" who said we were wrong and had high expectations
of heavy 4x4's, and reckoned there was nothing wrong with the Tucson is
this:-

IT APPEARS THAT OUR SUSPICIONS WERE RIGHT ABOUT OUR TUCSON'S ALL ALONG
!!

How many more of you have had your upgrades?
What is your experience?

Personally even though Hyundai have taken a long time to make the changes, I feel it has been worthwhile and I am grateful to them for actually doing the research and producing the parts for the upgrade package.

If YOU have not received your upgrade yet, I echo exactly what Geoff (Itsatusconmatey) has pointed out to you. Get Hyundai to upgrade your vehicle!!

Thinking back to the tests performed by Hyundai themselves, they said they achieved 40mpg with combined driving on a variety of roads and locations. I DO NOT BELIEVE THEM!

To achieve the results they claimed, they must have put the vehicles in wind tunnels, driven downhill, in a hot country, with the most slippery oil, exactly the right tyres and driven by grannies.

I am also now considering getting the CR Powerbox from MAL Electronics which Geoff reported gave another 2mpg to his vehicle.

Well, that's it!

See ya round
Jim

Sorry this may be a stupid question my 2.0 CRTD CDX only has a 58ltr tank in it. You have said that you put 66ltrs and 67ltrs in on both tests and you now get over 500 in one test and 450 in the other per tank. Are there two sizes of tanks

I have had the upgrade.
My first tank after the fix was filled to the brim with 62 litres.(13 gallons)

The driving included:

125 miles to and from work, no higher than 40mph MPG indicated 32mpg
90 miles towing a caravan in a head wind. MPG indicated 27mpg
250miles driving country road averaging 50mph MPG indicated 44mpg

total mileage= 465miles. average 35mpg on winter fuel!.

Second tank

60 litres,

all mileage to and from work, round town, not much over 40 mph.

MPG indicated 34mpg

total mileage = 425 average 32.6, its May, so must be summer fuel.

before the fix, the best I got was 440miles on 65 litres , the average was 425.
on summer fuel, winter fuel was about 400 miles.
I think on a steady motorway run at 50-60, the car will easily get 40mpg, and well over 500miles. This is what I was expecting when I got the car. Which is pretty dam good. If you expect more, then you have got the wrong car.

as a note, i towed the caravan (about 1350kg) through town at 35mph, in FIFTH, quite easily

Finally had the computer 'reprogammed' ( I have the GSi model). Will let you know if it makes a difference to fuel economy as soon as practical.

I must admit the engine felt a little rough yesterday after the modification was done but seems back to normal today. Did anyone notice any difference to performance or engine response afterwards?

The engine was rough for first few days, but its only cos of the reset. The car will get used to your driving so to speak in a few days.

Hey Ho Bow and touch forelock to the Great Ginger Baker

Glad to hear that you have an improvement on your fuel used since modification I think you will find that it can get better than that!

I believe that this tankfull I am on my way to achieving over 36miles to the gallon and for me that will be great sucess. Admittedly I still drive frugally with speeds of 60 mostly and bursts up to 80 on motorways and within the limits elsewhere.:auto:

Cheers all and Three    for Ginger Baker who started the whole thing off. :amen:

Message for Davey P

The tank is 55 litres you also have a reserve of 9 litres and by filling it to the brim thats another 5 so you too can get more in.
I never let it get below the line and usually fill about the time the reserve would kick in and I can get 58 litres up to the neck.
Try it you will see what we mean- in some instances others have been given a slightly bigger tank (probably what they have for the USA models)

Had the modification done a while back and its taken some time to get an idea of any changes to consumption. It appears that there has been a slight improvement (1mpg) - I will be more accurate with time. This might not appear a lot but I wasn't getting as bad an mpg as some (averging 35mpg with careful driving).
My only concern is that towing our new caravan the consumption has dropped from around 28mpg to 25mpg. I know the new 'van' is 300kg heavier but I didn't think it would make that much difference - or was I being naive? Feedback by those with caravans would be helpful here - thanks

I have a caravan. My mpg averaged 35mpg without van, but dropped as low as 28mpg when towing when i first had the mod. But after I towed a few times there was a vast improvement. 32mpg was my last. Caravan is an Abbey GTS Vogue 517 if you want to compare weight.

Thanks for that Garethr. If your Abbey is the new model its only slightly lighter (1470kg) than my Senator Indiana (1500kg fully laden - which it never is - probably more arround 1430kg). my previous caravan was a Pagaent Monarch (maximum weight 1210kg) and I was quite happy with 28mpg. But you say your getting 32mpg with the Abbey - that's really good mpg!

Perhaps becasue the van is new the brakes need bedding in or something, because 25mpg is a fuel economy that nmkes towing any resonable distance increasingly expensive.

The problem I have is that in the back of my mind is the thought that maybe the modification has caused the poorer towing economy.

Can I just add a note to prospective Tucson buyers?
After reading all the many posts about fuel consumption, I was seriosly put off buying a Tucson. When the situation seemed to be resolved (and a big thank you to all who kept up the pressure on Hyundai to do something) I went and had another look. Well, to cut a story short, I went and bought a new 2006 model with the 2.0 CRDi VGT engine delivering 140 horses through a 6 speed box. I am delighted to say that it is giving 7.6 l/100 KM (37.33 mpg) straight out of the box and I believe this may well improve after 5000kms of so when the engine has loosened up a little. so, I'm a very happy bunny with my new toy !!!!

the new VGT engines are excellent, I just bought the Sante fe cdx 2.2VGT My mpg is averaged 36mpg on first tank, and 39-40mpg on second tank.

All this info re fuel consumption after having the mods done is great BUT please tell us if you have a manual or auto gearbox ............ it makes a difference.

For what its worth ...... there has been only a very slight improvement since I had it done and still nowhere near the claimed mpg.

CRTD CDX AUTO.

Thought I would come back into the forum, been lurking in the background for a while.

Like DMorgans, I was getting around 34 mpg. I had the mod done a few months ago and found the first couple of tanks gave 37 - 38 mpg which I was really pleased with. It has now settled back to around 35 mpg, so not a great improvement.

I toured France a few weeks ago with my caravan and clocked up 1780 miles. All but about 230 miles was towing, so quite a test for the Tuc. My average consumption for the trip was 29 mpg, so really pleased with that. The van is an Abbey Lincoln, weight is 900kg, so not as large as some of the other members. the route I took included some long and quite steep hills which would have pulled the FC down some. The Tucson performed faultlessly and makes a brilliant towcar.

Thanks for that Richwafta. Its seems that our Tucsons are performing very much on a par - at least solo.

If there is anyone else with feedback of towing a caravan with the Tucson I would be pleased to hear from you
