Hi everyone,
Back now with my new test results since my fuel package mod was applied. Some may recall my original fuel test over a year ago, which you can see at the start of this enormous thread. So we can make a direct comparison!
Anyway, here are the gory details :P
Model:
Tucson Diesel CRTD CDXPurchased:
Dec 2004Mileage on Clock when Modification Package applied:
15700Hyundai package applied:
New instrument cluster console + new Drive spline + Engine Control Unit reprogramming. No other modifications.Notes: 1. Filling to the brim, means exactly that. Fill until absolutely no more fuel could be put in. I could see the fuel in the angled filler cap. No bubbling, and no drop in level. FULL !!!
2. I am UK based hence measurements are for
UK miles per gallon.
3. Previous tests one year ago resulted in
31 mpg best efforts, and roughly 340 miles on a tankful. Although this wasn’t filling to brim as I have done for these new tests.
4. New tests performed April/May 2006 so temperatures are between 10 and 20 degrees Celsius.
5. Tyres are as originals fitted when vehicle purchased.
6. Figures calculated and checked using
http://www.euronet.nl/users/grantm/frans/fuel.htmlhttp://www.euronet.nl/users/grantm/frans/fuel.html
7. Before each test,
both Trip Meter
and MPG Meter were reset to Zero.
TEST 1: EXTREME ECONOMYDescription:Beginning immediately after leaving the garage once the mods had been applied.
Filled completely to the brim. Then followed 2 weeks of cautious driving in an endeavour to obtain the maximum fuel efficiency I possibly could. Rev range 1500-2500rpm where practical and safe. Use of best and most economic gearing, ie 5th whenever possible, almost to the point of labouring the engine. Throttle back on downhill slopes.
I do little town driving. 50% of my daily travel (32 miles) is on the A1 (Great North Road), a reasonably long straight, level road, travelling
STRICTLY at 65mph (manual, no cruise control, very rarely to 70mph). 50% is on back country roads, travelling at
40mph maximum in 5th gear. This route is exactly the same as my original route test right at the beginning of this forum post thread, one year ago. Driving was as light-footed and smooth as possible. 2 and a half weeks of driving like this drove me nuts!
Upon empty tank, refilled to brim and recorded details as follows:-
MPG Meter in car reads:
33.1mpgLitres to refill:
67.00 = 14.73 UK gallons = 17.69 US gallonsTotal mileage covered on this tankful:
542.4 miles = 872.9km
Fuel performance equates to:
36.82 UK mpg or
30.66 US mpg or
7.68 l/100km or 13.03km/lImprovement since 1 year ago (31mpg):
+ 5.82mpgTEST 2: JUST GO FOR IT, DON’T CAREDescription: Pedal to the metal. Similar routes to above but also some long journey driving. Generally 70-85mph on main A roads and occasionally 90mph. Back roads generally 45-70mph depending on conditions. Generally the way I normally enjoy driving, not excessive.
Upon empty tank, refilled to brim and recorded details as follows:-
MPG Meter in car reads:
29.8mpgLitres to refill:
66.19 = 14.55 UK gallons = 17.48 US gallonsTotal mileage covered on this tankful:
467.5 miles = 752.36kmFuel performance equates to:
32.13 UK mpg or
26.74 US mpg or
8.79 l/100km or 11.37km/lImprovement since 1 year ago (29mpg):
+ 3.13mpgWell that's it. I am pleased with the overall improvement.
Obviously the MPG Meter shows between 2 and 4mpg short of the real MPG figure.
Also I have not noticed any loss in performance (i.e. acceleration).
The other point I think we should remember, after all the pessimists and
so-called 4x4 "experts" who said we were wrong and had high expectations
of heavy 4x4's, and reckoned there was nothing wrong with the Tucson is
this:-
IT APPEARS THAT OUR SUSPICIONS WERE RIGHT ABOUT OUR TUCSON'S ALL ALONG
!!
How many more of you have had your upgrades?
What is your experience?
Personally even though Hyundai have taken a long time to make the changes, I feel it has been worthwhile and I am grateful to them for actually doing the research and producing the parts for the upgrade package.
If YOU have not received your upgrade yet, I echo exactly what Geoff (Itsatusconmatey) has pointed out to you. Get Hyundai to upgrade your vehicle!!
Thinking back to the tests performed by Hyundai themselves, they said they achieved 40mpg with combined driving on a variety of roads and locations. I DO NOT BELIEVE THEM!
To achieve the results they claimed, they must have put the vehicles in wind tunnels, driven downhill, in a hot country, with the most slippery oil, exactly the right tyres and driven by grannies.
I am also now considering getting the CR Powerbox from
MAL Electronics which Geoff reported gave another 2mpg to his vehicle.
Well, that's it!
See ya round
Jim

Sorry this may be a stupid question my 2.0 CRTD CDX only has a 58ltr tank in it. You have said that you put 66ltrs and 67ltrs in on both tests and you now get over 500 in one test and 450 in the other per tank. Are there two sizes of tanks
