So...a while ago I was experiencing transmission problems (slippage and such) and then one day it wouldn't shift at all. I got on the highway and at 60 mph it would be at 4000+ rpms. Also, when I would come to a stop and then try to go again, it would not accelerate and when it would, it would just rev. So, I got a new throttle pos sensor put in and a new ECM put in. As soon as I got the car back the check engine light came back on. The idiot...I mean mechanic...came back and ran the computer scan, and said that he reset it since the transmission was still reading from the old ECM. Everything worked fine for 3 weeks and now it's doing the same EXACT thing!!! My check engine light came back on and Autozone said it read a P0501- vehicle speed sensor; they said that there was no response from it. It's a 1999 Hyundai Accent GL- V4.

So, finally, my questions are:

1. Where is the VSS in my car? (I have heard under the hood, under the dash, behind the speedometer, and on my right wheel.)
2. What does the VSS look like?
3. Autozone said there was no response, so do you think the VSS is broken, or just not hooked up properly?
4. Could it possibly be something else?

I have done quite a bit of research, but I've just confused myself even more :(
Responders: Thank you for your time and any input would be greatly appreciated. Please try to "dumb-down" any instructions or explanations that you may have, as I am not too mechanically inclined.

First, reset the ECU, this is how i normally do it, just disconnect your battery, and hold the brake pedal down for around a minute or so, then let the car sit with the battery disconnected for 10 minutes. Reconnect the battery, and start the car. Sometimes that actually does the trick, I've had a "revving" problem once.

I'd buy a Haynes manual and look into the VSS... i'm not exactly sure where that's located but it can definately be one of your problems. I'd figure it's under the hood somewhere, but I cant be definitely sure. Also take some WD40 to the throttle cable, it may be sticking a bit.

Check your fuses... all of them, under the hood and the ones in the car. Make sure to use a good fuse tester, and check each one, even though you may believe your problem is irrelevant to the fuse's job.

Come back with the results... if what I'm suggesting doesnt help, I'll help you further... but believe me... the fuses and the ECU getting cranky needing a reset can make the car act awfully weird..

the transmission is most likely loched in "fail-safe" mode, locked in 3rd gear. Some time it momentary shift into 1st for "pull-away", and then shift into 3rd (lack of power and high rpm at 60mph). This is generally caused by the TCM speed sensor, which is Pulse generator "B" (PG-B) failure, or a data conflict between the VSS (reed switch screwed onto the speedo head) and the PG-B sensor.
Go back to the guy who sold you the ECM (was installed unnessesary) and get your money back. Then go to your Hyundai dealer, who has the updated VSS, and have it installed. Also, have the tech check the PG-A & B.

I have this exact same issue, i tested my sensors and the only thing reported back to me a P0500 Speed Sensor "A", would this code be the cause to the problem?
