Hi guys, newbie here :)

I have a 1998 Hyundai Atos...

I have an irritating clanging sound every time I brake the car, coming from the back, which I've had seen to by a mechanic who told me that the problem is that in my fuel tank there is a separator which has come loose. He has offered to either replace the whole fuel tank or simply remove the annoying separator (since it cannot be welded back for obvious reasons). He told me, though, that I might be running a slight risk of losing the balance of the car around corners.

Now, my question is, do you have any idea whether this is as risky as it sounds? Or is it a risk which is too small to be serious? My mechanic assured me that it isn't a serious risk, but I would like to ask some opinions before I go ahead, just in case. Any ideas?

Thanks!

In all car & lorry fuel tanks there are "baffles"/seperators. The purpose of this is to stop the fuel sloshing around in the tank when cornering or braking.Consider 1 gallon of petrol weighs around 9.5 pounds factor that up on a full tank of say 9 gallons and thats a lot of displaced weight. If there is only one loose or fallen to the bottom of the tank I would not worry.
Unless the fuel tank splits in 2 ( which I doubt) I cannot see how he can romove the loose part.
Its only petrol tankers that carry 3-4000 gallons that need to worry about emptying tanks correctly and ensure the baffles are OK. If I were you I would not worry about the noise otherwise if it concerns you a new tank is the best option

Hope this helps
