one earth lead hadnt been replaced properly on the engine block noticed it last night when it started arcing iv tightened it back up but still haveing same problem wondering if this could have caused damage to the new alternator that id just fitted going to replace alternator again tommorrow if this problem still occurs after fitting is there any other things it could be iv tested the wire on the positive side of the battery to see if there is any current been drained whille the engine is not running and there isnt a current running through so i dont think it could be drained from a short etc . i tested the output of the alternator and is only charging when the engine is cold but cuts off 2 mins after the engine has started any other thoughts thanks

Hi guys, i'm a newbie in need of some help, my wife has a 1.6gls Lantra '95 It still has an intermediate charging prob after 10 months, i have to charge the battery every night otherwise if she drives it next day it will die. I've had 3 alternators and 2 batteries so far and the symptoms persist, as above, it charges when cold (14.5volt) but 5mins later the charge rate dropes to 12.5volt and stays there, sometimes it drops to 10volt. One thing that does puzzle me is, when ever the car dies due to a flat battery there is no warning from the battery charge light on the dash, it only seems to illuminate when ignition is switched on with a fully charged battery, does this have any bearing on my prop, i've had the dash apart and all bulbs/connectors are ok, my work shop manual says its impperative that all HT leads are positioned correctly otherwise electrical probs can occur, is this right 'cause mine all lay over each other! Thanks in advance.

firstly the h.t. leads would have nothing to do with your problem, have you tried dis-connecting the battery of an evening and then re-connecting again in the morning? it could be that something is draining the battery when it left idle

Cheers Montego, i've tried that in the past and no good, do you know how many earth straps there are? Sorry to be a pain but my next question is, on our Lantra there is a small black box adj to the power steering resevoir/screen wash resevoir with a multi plug, what is this please? Rgds, Phil.
