I have a 2005 base Tucson 2.0 gas 5 speed manual, front wheel drive. Like most here, I complain about the fuel consumption and how it doesn't get what Hyundai says it will. I live in the country and do very little urban driving. I average about 10L/100 kms or 28.5 mpg imperial. At a steady 100 kph in top gear the engine is at about 3000 rpm.
Recently I did an entire tank at about a steady 2000 rpm or 65 kph and below (don't ask). Big difference. 8.5 L/100 kms or about 33.2 mpg imperial. Got over 100 extra kms per tank. I always thought 3000 rpm was too high for steady highway speeds. So maybe it's not the computer after all. Something as simple as a taller tire will drop the rpm and should improve FC.
Now for all you mechanical types out there. The Tucson is just an Elantra underneath. The Tucson is about 210 kg heavier but seems to have plenty of power for normal driving. The final drive of the Tucson is 4.533 while the Elantra is only 3.65. Could you swap out the final drive of the Elantra into the Tucson? In the old days of rear-wheel drive swapping gears was easy. I know nothing about front- wheel drives.

I had poor consumption on the 2.0 petrol. I fitted bigger tyres and it made no difference.

I now have the 2.0 Diesal. With regards to the revs, I do the same, and get the same results. Although I dont have the consumption problem, I have found if I keep the engine revs at 2000, my consumption improves. I tend to stay in 3 and fourth gear under 45mph.
