QUOTE(Dragonmp5 @ Apr 25 2007, 01:23 PM) I would say if your not going to post speed then shut up and back off. Grammar Police Alert Again, it's you're (you are) not your (relating to you; possessive; denoting ownership). - "I would say if you're not going to post speed then shut up and back off." as in: - "I would say if you are not going to post speed then shut up and back off." Back on topic: Audioquest is entitled to his opinion as are you. I happen to agree with Audioquest. That speed on a public road is dangerous not only to yourself but to others. If you want to find out the limits of your car and your abilities then it should be done on a track. While not 100% safe, at least a track has limited dangers. That being said, I've only had my Tib to about 95 (on a track) while I've had my Nova to a little over 120.

QUOTE(Dragonmp5 @ Apr 25 2007, 12:05 PM) To the audio guy, if you don't have your fastest speed to put on here then don't talk s*** when you kknow you will get f***ed up. Its our choice on going whatever speed we want and there is nothing you can do about it so shut the F*** up a-hole! Don't even bother posting again cuz your obviously stupid. I can appreciate the ego trip you are on. You are probably in your late teens, early twenties - life is good, so to speak. You get onto PUBLIC road ways and rev your motor. You feel good! Look at me, my "Elantra" can go 120 miles an hour. Then, while you are going at this exciting speed, some poor soul who is going to the grocery store, minding his own business, pulls out into traffic, or merges onto the highway. He can't judge the distance because of your speed. You can't avoid him for the same reason. Unfortunately, the 3 year old child who has no clue what is going on when you t-bone the side of his car, is the first casualty. As far as your injuries are concerned, who cares? I can't believe you would call someone "STUPID" for asking you people to show some intelligence and drive sensibly. If you ask me the definition of "STUPID" it would be some 20 year old punk driving a Hyundai Elantra anywhere near 100 miles an hour. I owned a 99 Elantra, and let me tell you that I wouldn't put my worst enemy in that car at those speeds. It's a economical family car. If you guys really want to go fast, save the money you WASTE on making these cars go faster, and enroll in a racing program. Buy a kart and spend your money on making it go faster. My job involves investigating automobile accidents. A lot of them involve young people driving too fast in cars that were NOT meant to be driven that way. I again ask you to think about it.

QUOTE(Dragonmp5 @ Apr 28 2007, 10:04 AM) If you actually take a look at your first posting to this topic you were talking crap. Your opinion is one thing but that crap you were saying can get poeple **** off. As a matter of fact you don't have to be a teen or early 20's, I have had people 40+ fly past me. I rarely even get close to 100 and the tracks are just too far out to get to on a regular bases. Now I'm sorry about goin off but I also don't need the other guys correcting grammar when no one else cares so long as they can understand it. It's an emotional topic. If you've seen some of the things I have seen at accident scenes, you'd understand my bitterness. This thread sounded like a big brag-fest and I believe somebody needed to intervene. Statistically, young males are still the largest demographic cause of speeding accidents on North American roadways (that's why their insurance rates are always the highest). Going too fast in any kind of car is dangerous, but going too fast in a car that has no business going fast is another. I'm not knocking the Elantra because it's a decent commuter car. I don't wish any ill-will on anyone here. I'm a four time Hyundai owner and I enjoy performance driving just like anyone else. It just doesn't make sense to bury your speedometer on public roads.

Look guys you both have valid points.
The is a difference between driving fast and driving carelessly or dangerously. 150+ mph can be safe in the proper situation. These cars are designed to work best at speeds of up to 70mph..... they'll cope with a good 90mph before getting upset and loud but not speed cars all the same.
Audio, if you are on the motorway (highway) at 2/3am and there are no junctions or other cars then you only have to worry about whether you can handle the road. I would not have expected anyone on here to have reached over 100mph on a normal road with pedestrians and traffic about. Not only the fact that it's stupid and careless, but it's near impossible due to the nature of the roads.... not to mention the risk of a law enforcement officer happening to spot you.
I am all for speed, love it. I never drive at high speed with passengers in my car as it's irresponsible. I never drive fast when doing normal driving to and from where I am going, I only go fast when I go out specifically to do so late at night on motorways (highways) not near a junction. In this instance, I would consider it safe to drive at 130mph ish. I just like to see what my car can really do, it's good to know.
There is also another issue as well. Being negative about people's thoughts and abusive is not the answer. If you disagree with something, firstly you should be tactful and secondly you should not be abusive. All you are gonna do is get someone's back up and then they are not going to listen to what you say in a million years. They may even go out and do what you disagree in just to spite you so bad plan yea.

QUOTE(Audioquest @ Apr 25 2007, 08:44 AM) Are you guys a bunch of idiots? Why the **** would you want to drive an Elantra that fast anyway? Are you doing it on a private track? I sure as **** hope you're not doing it on public roadways because when you wipe out and kill yourselves, you're probably going to take the life of some innocent people with you. Think about it... Quite true,no arguement here but I hit 140 km. It all depends where and when and also for how long they were doing the speed they were going at,as to how much of a danger it was. Can't do this all the time for smokie will surely catch you one day.For those of you outside of North America who may not be familiar with this term, smokie is slang for police.

Hit 190kmh the other night on one of the worst bits of road around my town. Had to slow down for a turn that was on the crest of a hill. It still had plenty left in it though
this was in a '99 Lantra 1.8 with only a sports exhaust. i think it will be a while before i do that again.

97 lantra sportswagon at 231km/h on private road..... no mods. I believe in full race harnesses to even TRY this kinda speed in a car with no cages.
I'd also like to point out to all the posters before who were having a winge that I belong to the RFS (Rural Fire Service) in New South Wales (Austr.) and have done since I was 16. I don't believe a driver should attempt these kinds of speeds were there is a chance of any other person becoming a victim in the *worst possible scenario*, not what you think could happen. I also believe that a good driver knows their own capabilities and stays within them. a GREAT driver always stays within the percieved capabilities of the drivers around them.
I'm not here to say anyone shouldn't drive the way they are, or lecture on the risk of speed and arrogance. That'd be dumb. just check the speed at the top of my post. I almost tore the car apart because the ROAD wasn't graded for these speeds. I never thought of that. all i'm going to say is that private or specialised roads are the best place for this kinda fun, but if your absolutley desperate... a freeway between exits, middle of the night, and wearing a helmet.
