I have a 2005 Elantra 5 speed. I noticed with the stock radio if the cruise control was engaged, it would create electrical noise on weak AM radio stations. I replaced the stock radio with a good Clarion unit and the same problem exists. I could live with this as I am usually not in a bad area commuting from home to the office for a long time.

This past weekend I had to replace the existing power amp for the radio with a new unit. I used all the existing wires and to my dismay, there is now electrical noise, hum, in the amp whenever the cruise is engaged.

Has anyone else had this problem? If not could someone rum the experiment of tuning to a weak AM station and engaging the cruise.

I also own a 2005 Sonata and the crusie doesn't create the same problem

Thanks to any help

The radio ground is supplied at the harness connector (black wire), and could pick up electrical noise from other components. To help prevent this, cut the ground wire approximately 1inch+ away from the connector, solder another wire to the stubby at the connector, and fasten it to a metal part close by. We have been doing this on some Sonata’s.

the funny thing with the external amp, is it is connected directly to the battery and grounded to the tub. The isse seems to be the solenoid or whatever controls the speed. One other note if I have the crusie set at 70 and accelerate to 75 the noise goes away until the speed goes back down to 70 when the crusie has to maintain speed again

Of course it goes away on acceleration, the cruise operates on a duty-cycle principle. When you “ACCEL”, then the unit swings off the duty to a full cycle. Also, the radio is still in the sound system, amp or no amp.

I have a 2005 Elantra 5 speed with a similar problem. I get the AM radio noise anytime the key is in the run position. The car does not have cruise control. I can place the key in the accessory position, and the noise stops in about 20 seconds.

This happens with or without the engine running.

I have asked the dealer if there is a fix for this, and they said Hyundai has not issued a bulletin on the subject.

Anyone had a dealer fix this problem?

Duke: Where is this ground connector you spoke of in your post?
How is the ground wire from the radio identified? Just color?

thanks..

I tried grounding to the chassis instead of the connector and it didn't help. I noticed in my scenario, The item the caused the buzz to be more noticeable was the pre-amp output for the sub from the Clarion head unit.

I took my car to a dealer in town today to fix the noise in the AM radio. They said a pad of insulation by the radio has caused the problem. They removed it, and made sure the case of the radio had a good ground.

This made a good improvement in reducing the noise. Still some in the background. They showed me a note from a tech meeting outlining the problem, noise from the instrument cluster. Said Hyundai is putting together a tech bulletin to address the noise.

While I was there, I tried the AM radio in a 2006 elantra.

No Noise.

I have the same issue. When I engage the cruise control I get the noise when I listen to a weak AM station.

Has there been any solution to this issue yet?
