Bob Mob, if the fuses are all definately OK, I would check the brake light switch. It is (usually) located near, and pushed up against the brake pedal arm. It should have power (be able to illuminate a 12volt test light) on one wire, and connect that power to the other wire when the pedal is pushed.

I didn't want to start a new thread just for my trivial enquiry and bob's post is 2 years old so perhaps he has sold his car by now!
Not sure how to access the third brake light myself - sorry! I can't even get to my pollen filter despite almost pulling the glovebox out of its mountings!
