I live in Hawaii. There are no Auto Zone stores over here.

I recall reading in some forum somewhere that Auto Zone will give you a free reading on your "engine light" signals. Forgot it right away, just remembered it now, and thought I'd pass it on to the group.

Please call them first, as I don't actually know myself if AZ does that.

I had the light twice, local gas station wanted $80 to ID the code, and the dealer wanted $90. (Dealer did the whole repair, melded the code reading into the overall repair price.)

I hope it works and saves someone some money.

Just remember that getting it scanned and getting the code from the Auotzone/Advance type store is just a step in the right direction. I have gotten it done there and often. It doesn't mean that it the system/item that was tripped is the cause that throws a code on that system. It may say sensor reading high but it could be the sensor or even a wiring problem. Thats just a broad example. I bought a scanner for 150 at the time since I was tired of spending the 90 dollars and figured I would start troubleshooting myself. I have had the dealer nix the troubleshooting cost since I had it repaired there. I have also had them scan it and tell them I would do the work at home and then on the way out I stop at the parts section and asked for guidance (not too much,do a little research and then ask for help) and general tips they might have and put parts on order or elsewhere depending on preferance or importance. The dealer can ussually get it on the money when it comes to finding whats wrong they have a more sophisticated system that costs at least 1,000 dollars and up. Thanks for the reminder Biggezad Im in Alaska and I understand what you mean about availability of some conveniances or the monopoly of things.

Steve
